Print resources for teachers and librarians

Gillespie, J.T. & Gilbert, C. B. (1985). Best books for children: Preschool through the middle grades. New York: R. R. Bowker.

See if the other books in this series can be added in here... and include articles because librarians & teachers must keep current and aware of new titles, especially considering that so many of the leading reference works in this topic are older.

Miller-Lachmann, L. (1992). Our family, our friends, our world: An annotated guide to significant multicultural books for children and teenagers. New Providence, NJ: R. R. Bowker.

This reference book includes a huge number of books for children and young adults. It contains lengthy, critical annotations for about 1000 books published between 1970 and 1990. While some sections focus on people living within the United States, there are also many chapters focusing on literature from the different regions and countries throughout the world. The only shortcoming of this book is that it wasn't published more recently.

Stan, S. (2002). The world through children's books. Lanham, MD: Scarecrow Press.

This annotated bibliography of children's books published in the United States between 1996 and 2000 is a sequel to Tomlinson's book. Books in the bibliography are arranged by region and country, and extensive information about other aspects of international children's literature, such as publishers and organizations, is included.

Tomlinson, C. (1998). Children's books from other countries. Lanham, MD: Scarecrow Press.

A reference guide to children's titles originally published outside of the United States and translated into English. 724 titles are annotated with title and award information and country of origin.
