Howie in the movies

Backstreet Boys member Howie Dorough is heading to the big screen, according to the U.K. movie website Popcorn.

Following reports that Britney Spears and Ricky Martin are considering acting in a "Dirty Dancing" update and the *Nsync boys are about to star in their first film, comes news that Backstreet's Dorough has scored a lead role in a "Bloom", a coming-of-age story about a young Jewish man.

Dorough, 26, started acting at the age of eight but put his thespian skills on the back burner after joining the Backstreet Boys at 19, Popcorn reports.

According to Dorough, his role will be challenging because his character is "a bully".

Shooting on the movie is scheduled to begin in May, but Backstreet fans will be relieved to hear that Dorough isn't leaving the Backstreet Boys, but plans instead to juggle acting, touring and recording.

Backstreet Boys

ALBANY, N.Y. - Never let it be said that the Backstreet Boys don't have a sense of humor about themselves.

At September's MTV Music Video Awards, after enduring the comedic slings and arrows of host Chris Rock, they were confronted backstage by a certain infamous correspondent for Howard Stern's radio program.

"All of a sudden this guy starts blurting out these vulgar questions," recalls baby Boy Nick Carter, 19. "What was that guy's name?"

"Stuttering John," says bandmate Howie Dorough, 26. "He was asking pretty provocative questions, about our sexual tendencies and stuff."

"I was like, what is this?" Carter says, laughing. "Then security pulled him out. It was funny, though."

"Yeah, it was funny," Dorough agrees. "Howard Stern loves us, I think. He keeps his show runnin' with all the stuff he says about us."

Indeed, over the past couple of years, the Backstreet Boys have taken their lumps from countless pop-culture satirists, professional and amateur. And yet the members of this Orlando-based pop group - also including Kevin Richardson, 28; Brian Littrell, 25; and A.J. McLean, 22 - are still standing and still smiling.

And why not? The Boys' mix of youthful good looks, shimmering harmonies and hook-ridden pop singles has clearly inspired more adoration than mockery. Their most recent album, 1999's Millennium, has sold 11 million copies domestically and more than 30 million worldwide.

This February afternoon, as the Boys prepare for the fourth date on the second American leg of their Millennium tour, some of their admirers have gathered in the lobby of their hotel, cameras and autograph pads at the ready.

Never mind that the group isn't registered here under its name. "When you become - I don't want to say obsessed, but determined enough - you can find these things out," says Tanisha Dunn, 19, who has traveled from Los Angeles to see tonight's show.

Safely ensconced in a conference room on the hotel's second floor, the singers weigh the pluses and minuses of life as teen idols.

"You learn to live with it," McLean says stoically. "Myself and my girlfriend deal with it. You find yourself strategically changing your lifestyle a little. Like, Brian and Kevin and me go out and play golf every so often, because we know you're not going to find a bunch of 13-year-olds running around a golf course."

"You just have to plan ahead," says Littrell, who recently became engaged to actress Leighanne Wallace, his girlfriend of 2 1/2 years. (Richardson, Littrell's cousin, proposed to his longtime flame, dancer Kristin Willits, on Valentine's Day. "They love us for who we are," Littrell says of the Backstreet brides-to-be.)

"If you go the movies, you go to a matinee, when the kids are in school. If you go to the grocery, you go at 10 o'clock on a weekday."

"But I mean, really - what guy wouldn't want a bunch of screaming young women after him?" reasons Dorough, who is single at the moment.

"I cannot wait to go to my 10-year high school reunion," McLean says, "because I was looked on as the biggest geek." Whatever their desires or frustrations, the Boys' most fervent wish at this point is to be viewed as men - that is, as mature artists capable of handling both their creative and business affairs. "I feel like people look at us like we're children," Richardson says.

"We've been together for seven years, workin' hard. They think we're five pretty boys who just popped up out of nowhere.

"I think we've gained a little more respect since our last album, though - through our performances, and through just bein' ourselves, bein' real."

One example of this progress came last month, when the Boys' work on Millennium - which has been embraced by fans of adult Top 40 and adult-contemporary radio as well as teeny-boppers - garnered five Grammy nominations.

At tonight's ceremony, the young artists will compete in four major categories: album of the year and best pop album, for Millennium; and record of the year and best pop performance by a duo or group, for last year's smash single I Want It That Way (songwriter Max Martin is nominated for song of the year).

The Boys' performance at the Grammys will include an a cappella segment, designed to showcase their vocal skills.

"We want people to look at us like they would look at Boyz II Men or The Temptations or the Oak Ridge Boys or the Statler Brothers or the Beach Boys," Richardson says. "We have vocal talent. I think you can feel something in our voices. I think our record sales and the reaction we get from our fans are results of that."

But the Boys acknowledge that earning respect from the media and the music industry has to some extent been an uphill battle.

"There have been groups that have come before us that have left a bad taste in people's mouths," Littrell says. "When we came out, it was kind of like 'Oh, they're doin' the same thing those other guys did five or 10 years ago, and look what they amounted to.'"

"Their success is undeniable, and I think their talent is undeniable," says Anthony DeCurtis, executive editor of CDNow. "But I'm not sure people are ready to give them a bunch of Grammy Awards. Once you've been perceived as a teen idol, it becomes hard to sustain a career - we've seen countless examples of that."

Noted producer Phil Ramone, who has worked with career hitmakers such as Frank Sinatra and Billy Joel, is more optimistic.

"Pop artists get blasted quickly," he says. "But I think (the Backstreet Boys) are proving that they're musicians and that they can sing. And everything I've read about them indicates that they're dedicated. They've had some personal things go awry, and it hasn't interrupted their performing life."

The Boys' most public struggles have been with their label, Jive Records, and their former manager, Louis J. Pearlman, who oversaw the group's formation and early progress.

According to McLean, the estrangement from Pearlman, which occurred about two years ago, was so painful that the group waited more than eight months before signing new management. "We were without guidance for all that time," he says. "We five had to make all the decisions."

The dispute with Jive was apparently less traumatic, even though lawyers representing the group reportedly filed a breach-of-contract suit against the record company in October before renegotiating their deal with Jive in November.

"You never sign the greatest record deal when you're starting out," Dorough says. "Artists pay their dues - everybody from Elvis Presley to TLC has. Fortunately, everybody came to the table and made it more of a fair deal."

The group's new contract is reported to be a multialbum deal worth $60 million, but the terms of the agreement prohibit the disclosure of specifics.

"Now I actually think the record company looks at us as five grown men - five grown businessmen," Littrell says.

Regarding rumors that the tension with Jive was inspired by the label's decision to sign rival boy band 'N Sync in September, Dorough says: "'N Sync had been signed to Jive without our knowledge, and there was a bit of awkwardness about it. But we got everything smoothed out. It's a friendly competition. We see them at awards shows, and we're cool with each other. They do their thing, and we do our own thing."

The Backstreet Boys' plans for the future include doing their own thing as individuals.

"We have a lot of opportunities - writing, producing, directing," Richardson says. Dorough, a former actor, may pursue film offers.

"We never want to forget where we came from," Dorough says. "But we don't want our music to be just for a certain age range, or just for girls. We want it to be for everybody. Our audience is not just teenagers - it's mothers and daughters, boyfriends and girlfriends, people my age and older than me.

"When I walk through a mall now, guys actually come up and say, 'Yo, man, I really like your album. I play it to my girl, and it helps me express my feelings to her.' Things like that make me realize that maybe we can surpass expectations of us just being a flash in the pan. Little by little, I think, we're makin' it over that bridge."

The Backstreet Project

The Backstreet Boys are teaming up with legendary comic book editor/writer Stan Lee to create a new comic book and Web-based series detailing the music and super-hero adventures of the platinum-selling Orlando boy band.To read more, check out the Backstreet Project.

Lee and the Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter will serve as co-creators of The Backstreet Project, and a special edition comic book introducing the series will be available for sale at the group's concerts beginning on February 19 in Atlanta, Georgia.

That comic book will establish the heroic premise for the Internet animated series, which will incorporate Flash technology and is due to launch on the Web this summer. A Flash version of the initial comic book will also be made available via Stan Lee Media's site www.stanleemedia.com.

"I'm ecstatic to be involved with Stan Lee," Carter said in an announcement heralding "The Backstreet Project." "A comic book is something I've always wanted to do and we've finally made it happen."

"The Web-isode series will be derived from 'The Backstreet Project,'" added Lee in a statement. "We will use comic book to introduce the super-hero story to fans, so those fans not yet connected to the internet cam share in the excitement that is created by the animated Web-isodes." Lee is best known as a seminal figure in the creation of some of Marvel Comics' most endearing characters, including Spider-Man and the Silver Surfer, to name just a few.

As for the Backstreet Boys, the group is scheduled to launch the next leg of its North American tour with a two-night stand on February 11-12 at Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pennsylvania.

MIAMI, Jan. 20 (Reuters) - Burger King Corp. signed an exclusive promotional deal with the pop heartthrob Backstreet Boys, which will include a CD and video offer targeting teens and young adults, the hamburger chain said on Thursday.

Contract terms were not disclosed but Burger King said it would become the exclusive sponsor for the vocal group's autumn 2000 tour. The exclusive CD and video tie-in will feature an advance single from the group's ``Jive'' album as well as five recorded but previously unreleased live songs.

The August-September CD and video promotion will precede the ``Jive'' album release, which is scheduled for October.

``This is the first musical CD promotion ever undertaken by the fast food giant on a national basis,'' said Richard Taylor, Burger King's vice president for USA Marketing. ``Since they are the No. 1 group in the world, we are thrilled to bring the Backstreet Boys music to our customers.''

American Music Awards

Some backstage chatter from Monday's American Music Awards:

Howie D. had to do all the talking for the Backstreet Boys, who were chosen best pop group. The others were on vacation. "It's definitely an honor to be looked up to by so many people," he said. "We never claimed to be role models. Role models should be parents, doctors and teachers. We're just normal people with just as many faults as anybody else out there. I think you have to be wise in the choices you make in life. It's a crazy business and a lot of people get lost in the business. You have to surround yourself with positive people," he said.

Last night after the AWA Howie called in to CA radio station 102.7 KIIS FM to talk to JOJO (a DJ) about the award and why the other guys couldn't make it. All I herd was the last minute of the conversation. But I did hear him say that after he excepted the award he got a call from AJ who said that he did a good speech. Then Howie said that all the other guys were on vacation either over seas and just stuff like that. The they said bye to Howie who was calling on his car phone while in a normal Los Angeles TRAFFIC JAM! Oh yeah, also on my local news station they taped Howie after he accepted the award backstage and asked him what he thought of Britteny Spears and her very revealing dress (if ya'll didnt see it, it wasn't really a dress, but this pant suit thing with this like really skimpy trashy top on that showed half of each tit!) Anyways Howie said "I thought she looked hot!" then did this wink/snort/laugh thingy he does a lot. She was also one of the peeps who presented him with the award.

The Backstreet Boys won the category of FAVORITE POP/ROCK BAND/DUO/GROUP on Monday night's American Music Awards. The Boys were unable to attend with the exception of Howie, who gladly accepted the award on behalf of the guys. Howie mentioned they were in between tours and that he was in town writing songs for the new album. He told the fans to continue to "Keep the Backstreet Pride alive!"

"A lot of people told me they didn't want to work with me because I'm old," Santana told reporters backstage. "Mr. Davis believed in me. We both believed we had a masterpiece in our belly." Later in the evening, the aging rocker lost out to the Backstreet Boys for Favorite Pop/Rock Duo or Group, which was accepted by Backstreet Boy Howie D, who had kind backstage words for his elder. "Being a young little rookie, I kind of feel a little guilty," he said, "but we'll give him a run for his money."

I had just got out from work when I put B96 on, a local radio station here in Chicago. Anyway, they said they had Howie from the Backstreet Boys on from the AMA's backstage. The DJ congratulated him on his win and told Howie that they are so loved here in Chicago, which is true. Howie said thank you and remembered staying here for three days, he said something about Chicago being a special place for them. Anyway the DJ asked Howie why they attract women so much and his response was, "Well we try to shower every now and then." I was cracking up. Howie also told the DJ that the Backstreet Boys were planning the tour that is cracking up and them writing more songs for their next album.

BACKSTREET BOYS WIN 5 AWARDS, BRITNEY SPEARS GETS 4

By JANE STEVENSON

Teen pop idols Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears stopped Canada's country music queen Shania Twain in her quest for album and female artist of the year at last night's 1999 Billboard Music Awards held in Las Vegas.

Twain's latest release, Come On Over, was defeated by the Backstreet Boys' chart juggernaut Millennium in the top race for album of the year.

The Boys' brief appearance to accept their first of five Billboard trophies -- including artist of the year -- was notable if only for Nick Carter's high, teased hair, which he attributed to his intense plane trip to the ceremonies, televised live on CITY and FOX.

"I was on a plane today and I almost didn't make it for this award but I'm here -- that's why my hair's all messed up," Carter said.

Meanwhile, Twain was defeated in the female vocalist of the year category by 18-year-old quadruple winner Britney Spears, who also performed during last night's mostly ho-hum two-hour show.

Other multiple winners included Dixie Chicks, who won three trophies, including country artist of the year, and Latin pop star Ricky Martin, who picked up two awards, including Billboard's male artist of the year.

Predictable

Despite performances by Spears, Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Red Hot Chili Peppers, LeAnn Rimes, Juvenile and Quebec singer Celine Dion, the evening was predictable and slow -- running 10 minutes over. One good bit featured co-host Kathy Griffin sitting on the collective laps of the Backstreet Boys in the audience.

"I'm actually going to catch a little shut-eye," said Griffin. "Good night everyone. It's my Backstreet Boys bed."

The only real standout performance came from none other than recently experimental metalheads Metallica, who made Las Vegas history performing Until It Sleeps with a 79-piece orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen further down the strip at the Rio Hotel.

As for acceptance speeches, one of the most passionate came from an unlikely source.

Billboard's artist of the decade, Mariah Carey, who made her way through the audience to the stage in a crocheted mini-dress and high heels, gave an honest account of her life thus far.

"I'm so grateful to God to have overcome so many obstacles as a multi-racial person with a very dysfunctional history -- until recently," said Carey. "I am not Cinderella! My life has not been a fairy tale! Forget the image! Forget the ensembles! Forget the rumours! Forget the short skirts, big hair, whatever! I owe this to the fans and I will never forget you!"

'Best poem'

Other notable podium moments came via R. Kelly, R&B artist of the year, who accepted his trophy while on the cellular phone with his daughter, and rapper DMX, who passionately delivered a poem when picking up R&B albums artist of the year. (His performance prompted host Griffin to award DMX the Billboard trophy for "best posse and best poem.")

Canadian Sarah McLachlan, who presented Emmylou Harris with her Billboard Century Award, won a trophy for best adult contemporary single, although last night's broadcast from the MGM Grand Garden Arena didn't say for what song.

Aerosmith also won the artist achievement award after being introduced by actor Ben Affleck as "the greatest thing to ever come out of Boston," while Jay-Z picked up rap artist of the year honours.

Jive label mates Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears dominated the 1999 Billboard Music Awards, held yesterday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Although each received four honors, it was Backstreet Boys who snagging the coveted artist and album of the year awards, for "Millennium."Spears was no slouch, though, netting female artist and new artist of the year plaudits.

Metallica and Creed also earned two awards each, although they were not presented during the broadcast.

As previously announced, Emmylou Harris received the 1999 Billboard Century Award, the magazine's highest honor for artistic creativity, while Aerosmith was presented with the artist achievement award. Mariah Carey also was recognized as the artist of the decade.

Hosted by actors Kathy Griffin and Adam Carolla, the 1999 Billboard Awards featured performances by Spears, Martin, Jennifer Lopez, LeAnn Rimes, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Blink 182. Metallica also played, accompanied by a full orchestra.

The show honored this year's No. 1 artists and songs, as determined by the 1999 year-end Billboard charts. (The year-end statistics are compiled from Billboard's weekly charts published from December 1998 to December 1999.)
