Life at the beach
Musings of the ocean wanderer.....
Cruise to Key West- entry July 16, 2008

Well....the two things I can say are....we got out of the house and I'm glad we didn't go yesterday or today!!!  Seriously, we had a nice time when we were there, but it DEFINITELY is not a day trip!  First of all, we had to leave at 5:45am, because we thought we had to be there no later than 7:30.  Well, the boat didn't leave until 8:30, and we were there by 7am.  It was nice and sunny, with puffy white clouds....little did we know what was to come later!!  The trip down was not too bad for the first 3 hrs. The captain "squiggled"  in between storms the whole way down, missing pretty much everything, but made us feel like we were in a video game. Oh...and the wind stole Nick's glasses right off his face!!!! We got there at 12:30 and had to be back at the port at 5.  We got some lunch at Hogs Breath Saloon, because we used to watch the webcams.  Great food, but a heck of a lot smaller than it looks on the cam!  Then we went to the pirate museum, which was neat, and walked around some shops.  We didn't want to get too far away from the port, since we were walking, and by the time we headed back, we were dragging.  It sprinkled on and off the whole day.  We sat inside on the way back because you could see the black clouds ahead.....just a glimpse of what the trip home would be!  There was no dodging these storms, as we barreled right through at about 50 mph (not sure what that means in knots).  Up and down, back and forth...for the entire 4 hours!!!  I even saw 2 rainspouts!   People were sick all over the place....didn't matter sex, age, or size!!!  I didn't get sick, but luckily had brought some Dramamine, which I shared with those around me.  But my head...and oh my....even yesterday, both Nick and I still felt like we are on that boat!!!  It must have really messed up our vestibular systems!  He didn't get up until about 3:30pm....and although I was up, I tried to move as little as possible. Even now, I still feel “weird”.   Needless to say, we will not be going down to Key West by boat again......ugh......I heard many people say..."I am NEVER doing that again!!!!"

I guess if you can be assured of smooth sailing, it may be okay, but 8 hrs. on a boat for 4.5 hours on land is a little much.  So, I would suggest if you do go....make sure it is for at least over night....and bring the Dramamine!!!!  J
