Honoli'i has three fundamental subspots: (The)Point, Mids, and Privates.
(The)Point is a left-breaking reef break. This is the top of the food chain at Honoli'i. Featuring critical drop ins, the most easily viewed of all spots, and a reef littered with jagged boulders. This is also the only spot at Honoli'i with the fairly constant peak characteristic of point breaks. The reefs are terraced, and waves break off deeper and further out reefs as the swell increases. After making the first section--not always an easy task--the surfer can look forward to another section that breaks off the edge of the jutting point. In-n-out barrels abound on this transition.
Mids is a mainly right beach break. Great for longboarders as the wave frequently allows piggybacking onto an inside wave good for noseriding. Typical of beachbreaks, Mids' peaks are wild and unconstrained, shifting to and fro. Its been said that Mids is shiftier than the average beachbreak.
Privates is a beach break that produces rights and lefts. It is just as shifty as Mids. Privates is especially popular with the bodyboarders. Privates' waves generally end in closeouts, unlike Point and Mids which dump the surfer in a wide channel caused by outgoing Honoli'i stream.
