Dogs At The Shelter

Name: Bear
Gender: Male
Age: 2 years old and 4 months
Breed: Shepherd Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 4 months
Why this dog came into the shelter: He was left chained to the shelter gate, a padlocked around his neck, with Casper. He had sores on his neck from the chain. Now he is healed.
Photographer’s Comments: He was a little scary. But I think he was scared of me because his owner just left him. I would not like people, if somebody did that to me! If he just had a little bit more time to know me, I think he would understand that I would not do anything to hurt him.

Name: Bruno
Gender: Male
Age: 2 years and 3 months
Breed: St. Bernard Mix
Length of time in the shelter: This is his second time in the shelter. This time he has been here for 9 months
Why this dog came into the shelter: Bruno was first brought into the shelter when found as a stray. He was adopted in just 10 days! However, after 8 months, he was returned to the shelter because he kept running off.
Photographer’s comments: When you look at Bruno in his kennel he looks very big and out of control. But when I took him out and brought him indoors he was very, very gentle. He has two sides. He has a big and funny side and a big and gentle side. I think Bruno should be an indoor dog. Sandy Hoylt, a local dog trainer, has offered to give free training lessons to whoever adopts him. I would have taken him home, but I have two dogs already!

Bruno 2

Name: Buddy
Gender: Male
Age: 3 years old
Breed: Dalmatian
Length of time in the shelter: 9 months
Why this dog came into the shelter: Found as a stray at Mendocino Lake.
Photographer’s Comments: He wants everything. That’s what I saw about him. When he gets an owner I think he should get a man. He sometimes does not listen. So, he might need somebody to give him firm commands. That’s what I like about him. He wants what he wants. He is a toughie. I have a Jack Russell Terrier named, Mocha, and a toughie too. Well, he thinks he is, and I love him to death…

Name: Charlie
Gender: Male
Age: 2 years
Breed: Airedale Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 4 ½ Months
Why this dog came into the shelter: Charlie was found as a stray in the Rite Aid parking lot in Willits.
Photographer’s comments: Charlie is another gentle dog. He seems older than 2 years old. I think he is very mature for a 2 year old dog. This dog looks like a dog I saw in a movie. He likes puppies, but not older or bigger dogs than him. I think this dog should have been already adopted too!

Name: Checkers
Gender: Male
Age: 5 months
Breed: Border Collie/ Lab Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 3 months
Why this dog came into the shelter: He was found as a stray in Potter Valley.
Photographer’s Comments: He reminds me of Henry. He has that Lab-type energy in him, the “WACKYNESS” in him. He is doing very well in the weekly Puppy Class held at the Shelter. If somebody got him I think they would be very, very happy with him. He loves everybody, so he would love you too!

Checkers and Charlie

Name: Chippers (Thomas)
Gender: Male
Age: 2 months
Breed: Chocolate Lab
Length of time in the shelter: 3 weeks.
Why this dog came into the shelter: He was found in the street by the Redwood Valley Shopping Center with no collar on him.
Photographer’s Comments: Chippers feels velvety soft. He is very small now and his paws are too big for him. He prances around with joy. It’s very funny and very cute. He is in a foster home now with Julie. She is shown in one of the photos. When I saw Chippers I got all warm inside. I think he should have already gotten a forever home. This dog would make you be happy for the rest of your life!!!

Chippers 2

Name: Crystal
Gender: Female
Age: 2 ½ Years
Breed: Boxer
Length of time in the shelter: 1 month
Why this dog came into the shelter: Crystal was seen by a HSIMC volunteer at the Mendocino County Animal Care and Control Facility. She had been surrendered by her owner. They said she was aggressive with her littermates. AC&C would not have put Crystal up for adoption because of her history. However, HSIMC thought she should get another chance, so she came to the Shelter to await a new home as an only dog.
Photographer’s comments: Aww… She is very funny. If you look at the pictures you see a goofy and free side of her and then a tense side. She might do well indoors or out. My teacher, Sage, looked like she liked Crystal. People say Boxers are mean, but this one shows you that they can be very sweet. She is not close to being mean. She might look that way at first but once you pet her, you know she would not do anything to hurt you…

Crystal 2

Name: Gypsy
Gender: Female
Age: 1 year 10 months
Breed: Shepherd mix
Length of time in the shelter: 7 ½ months
Why this dog came into the shelter: She was turned into Mendocino County Animal Care and Control because she was abused. HSIMC then brought her to their shelter.
Photographer’s comments: Gypsy was not comfortable with me taking her photo. I think she was scared of the camera. I think she will make a great pet when she learns to trust people.

Name: Hooch
Gender: Male
Age: 3 years old
Breed: Pit Bull Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 11 months
Why this dog came into the shelter: He was found in a gully on Red Mountain, with no collar. The person who found him thought he jumped or was tossed out of a truck. They saved his life by bringing him to the shelter.
Photographer’s Comments: Hooch is a hunk of Hooch. He is so big but also a very sweet guy. I think his name fits him very well. I like the coloring on him. He is very calm. I liked that about him. Hooch wants everything to be his way and he wants an owner. That’s what I like about him, he wants everything. I have a dog that I love a lot, just like that.

Name: Jack
Gender: Male
Age: 2 years old
Breed: Shepherd Lab Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 1 month
Why this dog came into the shelter: Jack was found as a stray on Parducci Road.
Photographer’s comments: I LOVED JACK!!! I thought we had a good time together. We played and sat down together. He wants to be a lap dog, but he is too big for my lap. He really is not that big, but for my lap he is. He would put his head on me after I played with him so I could pet him. He just got in the Shelter and I hope my show will get him out really quick!

Name: Jackson
Gender: Male
Age: 3 months
Breed: Fox Terrier Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 3 weeks
Why this dog came into the shelter: He was found as a stray, with no collar, on Mill Creek Rd.
Photographer’s Comments: Jackson, Jackson, Jackson was the cutest. I would love him to come and live with me. I have a Terrier and he is a Terrier. We played for about an hour. He does not like to be held but I had to do something, so I kissed him. He is a very smart dog. He needs training but that does not mean you should not take this cute little guy home. If you adopted him you could go to the Shelter and train him at the free Puppy Class. Maggie got adopted so now Jackson is my wished for puppy.

Name: Joey C
Gender: Male
Age: 9 months
Breed: Lab Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 3 months
Why this dog came into the shelter: His owners were moving out of state and could not bring Joey C with them.
Photographer’s Comments: I could have taken him home. He is very sweet and very cute. I hugged him really tight. He reminded me of my teacher’s dog, Henry. Henry is very sweet and I hug him very tight too. It’s the Lab thing. I really hope he gets adopted soon. He is too cute to not take home…

Name: Nakomis
Gender: Male
Age: 1 year old
Breed: Lab Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 9 months
Why this dog came into the shelter: His owner abandoned him.
Photographer’s Comments: He is very, very playful. He was fun to be with. For somebody who wants a funny, playful and smart dog, they will have met their match. He is very happy and he wags his tail more than any dog I have ever seen. He is a happy boy.

Name: Patches
Gender: Male
Age: 1 year old
Breed: Terrier Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 2 months
Why this dog came into the shelter: Found as a stray on highway 101 with no collar.
Photographer’s Comments: He was sooooo cute, with his head turned in a confused way, when he looked at me. I think he thought I would take him home or take him for a walk. I would have taken him home and Maggie. He was my second favorite. This dog should have already been adopted.

Name: Ronnie
Gender: Female
Age: 2 years old
Breed: Pit Bull Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 4 months
Why this dog came into the shelter: She was abandoned by her ex-owners when they moved, a neighbor brought her to the shelter.
Photographer’s Comments: A very sweet girl that Ronnie. She is also very pretty. The picture shows her prettiness and her characteristics. She needs a lot of attention but she would be worth it!

Name: Sarah
Gender: Female
Age: 4 years 5 months
Breed: Heeler Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 2 years and 10 months, with one short, unsuccessful adoption and one home visit during this time.
Why this dog came into the shelter: Originally she was surrendered by her owner. One placement did not work out because she would run off when the gate to the fenced yard was left open. The home visit did not work because she chased the person’s horses.
Photographer’s comments: Sarah is a VERY, VERY sweet and a gentle girl. She would make an older couple happy. If you are looking for a playful dog I don’t think this would be the one. She has some energy but just perfect for somebody older. I am very surprised she has not been adopted. I thought people look for gentleness, and if you are looking for gentleness, she is here for you.

Sarah 2
Adopted

Name: Maggie
Gender: Female
Age: 4 ½ Months
Breed: Boxer Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 1 1/2 months
Why this dog came into the shelter: She was found as a stray in Willits.
Photographer’s comments: When I was taking her pictures I began to love Maggie. I looked in my camera and saw Maggie, so sweet and friendly. I really do not know how I did not take her home. I had dreams about her and I even put pictures in my room of her. She was my favorite!

Why this dog came into the shelter: He was found as a stray by Mendocino Country Animal Care and Control. He was then taken by the HSIMC.
Photographer’s Comments: He is a very sweet guy. He pawed at me when I went by his cage. I thought, “That is the sweetest dog and he likes me!” He liked me but he did that to everybody. He likes everybody. He has a nice white, pretty coat. My dog Lucky has that sweetness that I saw in Casper.
(ADOPTED AT THE UKIAH SHELTER)

Casper 2
(ADOPTED AT THE UKIAH SHELTER)

Name: Odie
Gender: Male
Age: 5 months
Breed: Terrier Shepherd Mix
Length of time in the shelter: 1 ½ months
Why this dog came into the shelter: Someone saw him being dragged behind a bicycle with a rope around his neck. She talked to the people who had him and they agreed to let her take him and allow him to be adopted through HSIMC.
Photographer’s comments: Odie was a very cute dog. He was scared of me because he probably thought I would drag him somewhere. After I pet Maggie, who was with him in the same kennel, he started to come over to me. Then I got to pet him. I think Maggie might have told him to come over. He is a very smart dog and a very cute dog. I think, in the photo, the way he stands makes him look very handsome. This dog would make a young kid very happy!
(ADOPTED AT THE UKIAH SHELTER)
Therapy Dogs That Were In A Shelter

Name: Sun
Gender: Male
Age: 15 months
Breed: Golden Retriever
Photographer’s Comments: I am the handler of this precious puppy. He comes to the library program, “Dogs Open Children’s Hearts and Minds to Reading”. He does get very excited when he sees kids. He will jump up and down and lick them. He was found as a stray, with no collar, by Mendocino Animal Care and Control, stayed in their facility for 5 days, taken by HSIMC and then adopted by Lucia. Lucia is Sage’s friend and she allows me to be Sun’s handler. I am proud to be this lovely dog’s handler. I see Sun as often as Sage does now that I am his handler!
(A THERAPY DOG)

Name: Zoe
Gender: Female
Age: 10 years old
Breed: Terrier Mix
Photographer’s Comments: Loretta brings Zoe and K.D to the library reading program. I get to see Zoe every Thursday. I like her a lot. Loretta can put Zoe’s hair in a punk way. It is very cute. I come over to Zoe when nobody is reading with her. I go over and pet her and while I pet her, Loretta always makes jokes about Zoe. They are very funny. So I get to a have a good laugh when I get to pet Zoe. It’s like twice the FUN!
(A THERAPY DOG)

Name: Hanna
Gender: Female
Age: 3 years old
Breed: Miniature Pincher Wiener Mix
Hanna’s Tale:
This dog has been under a horse and then knocked out. This dog has bitten electrical wires. Last but not least, she went to Glass Beach, ran down a path. Then jumped over a small stone fence and flew forward and down a 15 foot over a woman’s head. When she landed, she herself looked up and saw the woman and barked at her by a little dog named Hanna-Banana-Hanna-Piranha (the one in the photo).
Now, Hanna is no ordinary dog as you heard. She was adopted by a dog-lover, Eliza Wingate. Hanna has four pets that live with her. Two 90 pound dogs, a dog her size and one cat who she sleeps with most of the time. However, she is the leader of all of them.
Every night Hanna goes under the covers of Eliza's bed and sleeps like a person. I wonder if she snores?
Hanna has been on an airplane. Once she did Fly Ball and Agility Courses. Wow, what a dog, huh?
Hanna is three years old. She is a very young dog. She is a Therapy Dog. She does very well. She makes people laugh with her OUT OF CONTROL EARS! Eliza had another dog before Hanna who was a Therapy Dog and knew she would be one too. She got a K-9 Good Citizen certificate!
Don’t say BALL around Hanna, you better say it B-A-L-L or she will jump up and down looking for one. She just loves balls. Hanna-Banana-Hanna-Piranha is a very cute dog. You might say she is small but has all shapes and sizes in her dog-gone life.
(A THERAPY DOG)
Not Shelter Dogs

Name: Henry
Gender: Male
Age: 3 ½ years old
Breed: Yellow Labrador Retriever
Photographer’s Comments: When the creek at my schoolhouse is running all Henry cares about is water, water and more water. Henry comes to school everyday with my teacher, Sage. Henry is a very smart dog and I think wiser then Mocha, but don’t tell Mocha that I said that. He loves to play with other dogs, chase tennis balls and do tricks. As you can tell by this photo he can be “wacko”.
(SAGE'S DOG)

Name: Lucky
Gender: Female
Age: 6 years old
Breed: German Shepherd
Photographer’s Comments: This is my dog Lucky. She is very sweet. I love to hold her and kiss her. She had surgery on her right hip and when she was on the table she regurgitated and now she has esophagus problems. Now I have to put her food in a blender before I give it to her. I love my dog, Lucky, very much!
(MY DOG)

Name: Mocha
Gender: Male
Age: 4 years old
Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
Photographer’s Comments: Mocha loves to dig, act different and bug Henry. His favorite activity is to bug Henry. Henry weighs almost 100 pounds and Mocha weighs 20 pounds. Quite a difference, but there is not doubt Mocha thinks he is bigger and he knows he is older (and wiser?).
