If I were president, not saying that I am even eligable, there would be some changes that I might make to create a smarter, stronger country. As far as social security goes, I believe that we should have control over our savings, or for right now, at least a third of them. It is common sense to me that one would want to save for the future in the expectation of retirement. If one chooses not to save, however, one can only blame themself for being put in a state-run "old folks home." I was brought up with the foresight to "always be prepared," and if the boyscouts believe it, so do I. Social security has become a welfare system for those ill-prepared. In order to make the country stronger, instead of dependent and lazy, I suggest that it be our right to give a percentage of our paychecks to social security for OUR OWN savings or, that we might invest our money where we see fit. This overhaul of the social security system that is currently in place would cost a lot of money but, since the government can raise the debt cieling whenever they get close to it, I can't see why they don't just take out another loan.
So, Michigan has the highest unemployment rate...what's that you say Gov'ner? Raise min. wage? Bad idea. You would think the Governor would have a little economist birdy over her shoulder saying "the worst thing you can do to counter unemployment is raise min. wage." For those who aren't familiar with why, raising the min. wage makes more people want to work (good) but it makes employers not want to hire, and maybe even 'downsize' (bad). These two evens will counter each other and maybe even make it worse off. In the aftermath, the only people that will have jobs will be the highly-qualified and those with an education, preferably some college. The ill-educated and inexperienced will be left to the wolves. So I ask you, why didn't they stop Madame Governor before she made us look like the head of the 'State of the Stupid?' |
