After showing Dalmatians for 10 years, I had back surgery and due to several accidents, have "blown" both knees and one heel. This left me in a predicament! Not being able to run and handle my own dogs anymore - something I just couldn't tolerate. I always have handled my own dogs and will continue to do so.
My only choice if I wanted to stay in the fancy, was to choose a smaller breed that I could handle with my physical limitations. Besides staying active in the show world, I can't imagine life without a dog in it, so I had to decide on a different breed.
It took several years but I decided on the Dachshund - preferring the miniature longhaired variety. I'm just working on getting into the show ring with my Dachs, and hope in the future, to compete in obedience as well! With their sweet and loving temperaments, I think therapy work would be perfect for us as well!
