EYE OF THE HORUS

by The Order of the Nine Angels

This info below is about the "EYE OF THE HORUS", its symbol in the context
of gay sex magick. I'm not sure how widely known it is that Crowley used it
repeatedly to refer to anal sex, and probably to the XI* of OTO. Here's a
breakdown of the relevant references.

1. Starting with the Book of Lies, Ch. 61, last paragraph: "Thou naught-y
boy! Thou hast opened the Eye of Horus to the blind eye that weeps!" (This
one is from memory, so the precise wording might be a little off) The
"blind eye that weeps" is, according to Crowley, an Arab euphemism for the penis.
I don't know if he's right about the attribution to the Arabs, but I had
heard the expression long before reading Crowley. The note to this paragraph
says that the symbolism of this phrase can be understood by reading the
Bagh-i-Muattar, and Column XXI no. 10 of 777. The Bagh-i-Muattar, for
those unfamiliar with it, is Crowley's meditation on spiritualized
homosexuality.

2. In 777, Column XXI, no. 10, we read that the Eye of Hoor corresponds to
the buttocks and the anus. This is, no doubt, a weird attribution for most
people - it is for me anyway. Of course, this is the Eye that was gouged
out by Seth in the well-known myth. Makes ya think, don't it? :-) Notice that
key scale 26, Capricorn/Set has the same attribution as line 10. In this case,
the "eye" referred to is actually the meatus rather than the anus.

3. Finally, a more sophisticated reference can be found in Liber 418, The
Vision and the Voice. In Aethyr 16 (LEA), we read:
"For the ten palaces are broken, and the ten kings are carried away
into bondage, and they are set to fight as the gladiators in the circus of him
that hath laid his hand upon eleven. For the ancient tower is shattered by
the Lord of the Flame and the Lightning. And they that walk upon their
hands shall build the holy place. Blessed are they who have turned the Eye of
Hoor unto the zenith, for they shall be filled with the vigour of the goat."

The number of the Aethyr, 16, is the first double cube (2^3 * 2), and
therefore refers to Malkuth in a subtle way, so the attributions are
entirely consonant with the one in 777 and the Book of Lies. Other very interesting
symbolism here is that corresponding to the path of Pe on the Tree (the
House of God, the Blasted Tower, etc.), and that of the path of Ayin (the Goat,
Baphomet, the "Great Oak of God," etc). I think that for most people,
reading this passage would not suggest anal sex at all (didn't for me when I first
read it), but the on-hands-and-knees-with-ass-in-the-air image is almost
laughably clear in light of the above cited passages. The reference to
laying hands "upon eleven" is striking in reference to the XI*.
One last thing I find interesting about this thread of symbolism is that
it seems to have been a very clear and coherent set very early in Crowley's
exposure to the "central secret" of the OTO. The Book of Lies was
supposedly written prior to Crowley's obligation to the IX* by Reuss in 1912. This is
controversial of course, and it seems impossible that it happened the way
Crowley says it did. In any case, that's all material for a different
discussion.
