Inspired by “Lullaby” by Creed
The sounds of the dying battle slipped into the tent where a woman urged her young daughter and son to eat. They hadn’t eaten for a very long time, and they were trapped with nothing better to do. They all looked up when the tents flap came open letting in a large, silver furred monstrosity with wings. They watched with a mix of horror and amazement at what it would do or say, if anything. The creature turned its gaze to the ground next to him with tears welling in his eyes. Knowing what this meant, the woman rushed to him and wrapped her arms around him, holding him tightly. As he returned the embrace, the children came to each side of their mother and father and looked up to their tortured faces. The pair knelt down and brought the two into the close hold, and wings surrounded them all with warmth. Realizing that they were in trouble, they began to sob into the shoulders of their parents. Seeing this, soothing words seemed to flow into the great warriors mind, as if inspired by divine power, and so he spoke
“Hush my love now, don’t you cry. Everything will be alright.”
To those near the tent, the sounds of battle increased as the last of the outposts defenses fall. But within, it seems to fade away to the song.
“Close your eyes and drift in dream. Rest in peaceful sleep.”
With these words, the four grow yet more relaxed, forgetting their place, falling into the beauty of this song.
“If there’s one thing I hope I showed you . . . hope I showed you . . . just give love to all.”
All the world fades away for the family, even as archers prepare and notch their arrows to destroy all that they hold dear.
“Oh my love in my arms tight, every day you give me life.”
With the children soothed, he must now bid his one love one last goodbye for this life. All he can think of is if they will ever be together after these last few moments.
“As I drift off to your world will rest in peaceful sleep.”
If they will be together again, will they remember the other? Will they remember their infinite love? Or will they just be another face in the crowd?
“I know there’s one thing that you showed me . . . that you showed me . . . just give love to all.”
He will remember all that she has shown him, all that she has given him. He must. If not, then what was the point in living?
A beautiful, gentle tune fills their minds as arrows strike the fabric, quickly setting it ablaze, until the supports finally collapse.
