| "The Hourglass of
Awareness", by Ian Wilson
This piece incorporates a symbol that has appeared to me a few times during a dream. The meaning of the symbol relates to our awareness both while awake, and while asleep. One side of the hourglass represents physical reality. While the other side, represents dreams (non-physical reality). The symbol explains that we can only be aware of on side of the hourglass at a time. When we are awake, we are only aware of our life, and not aware of the dream. When we dream, we are not aware that our body is in bed sleeping. The symbol is very interesting to observe in terms of a time line. Imagine the expanded end of the triangle, at the base of the hourglass as a representation of linear time moving from A to B. A represents the moment we wake up, and B represents the moment we sleep. During that time, we are unaware of the dream side of the hourglass. When we reach B, we pass through the center of the hourglass into a dream state forgetting our waking life and remembering the dream. We then travel from points C to D. C is the start of the dream, and D is when we wake up and return to A. This pattern then repeats itself constantly shifting us from one focus of awareness, to another, changing what we think/know/understand as it relates to each side.
