Course Description:
Extensive practice in oral and written comprehension and expression.  Includes grammar review, vocabulary expansion, enrichment of knowledge of French culture through exposure to multimedia resources (e.g. web sites, films, slides, newspapers, magazines), compositions and frequent oral presentations based on materials viewed or read in class. Authentic news broadcasts and periodicals of current events, documentaries or film generate discussion and debate on issues that touch all of us in our global community.

Goals and Methods:
This course builds on the student's basic knowledge of French, equivalent to the completion of French 104.  The course objectives are as follows:
1.  To develop fluency in spoken French through participation in class discussion and preparation of individual and group oral presentations.
2.  To increase accuracy of written French through constant correction and revision.  Students have access to computer programs in the LLRC for this purpose.
3.  To enrich the complexity of sentence structure and vocabulary through weekly writing assignments on a variety of topics.
4.  To increase the ability to understand spoken French and French culture by frequent exposure to video-clips, newscasts, film classics, and materials available on French web sites.  Students may have to return several times to the LLRC to listen to class materials before gaining the level of comprehension necessary to meet course requirements.
5.  To increase knowledge of French history, geography, culture and contemporary life.
6.  To become familiar with French terms for computer technology and with authentic materials available on French web sites.
7.  To collaborate in the learning process with fellow students by working together in groups to prepare oral and written presentations.

Presence and active participation in class is essential.  Consistency is key in language acquisition and creation of a dynamic classroom climate when all class members are involved in the process daily.  You may miss two classes this semester, but at your own academic risk.  Please clear unavoidable absences in advance.

Class preparation.  Please follow the course schedule closely.

GENERAL FORMAT AND SCHEDULE OF ASSIGNMENTS:
Assignments will vary according to materials available on the web, in newspapers or on television broadcasts at any given time.  However, there will be consistency in that there will be weekly reading, oral and written assignments.
N.B. No late or emailed assignments will be accepted.

1. Web and Reading assignments  will be announced in class.
***Students must attend class to receive assignments.  In the case of excused absences, students are responsible for obtaining the assignment from another student or from the instructor.  In addition to being announced in class, assignments will generally be e-mailed to the group or put on the course web page.

2.  Oral assignments include answering questions on media-based cultural materials (television news, variety shows, newspaper articles); frequent oral presentations by designated students on weekly assignments. These presentations will be assigned in rotation.

3. Written assignments include :
1) Weekly one-page compositions, usually due on Friday.  The topic of the composition will be given on Wednesday (If you are ever confused about the topic, ask me!) .  Students should be prepared to access their compositions on the classroom computer and read them aloud.  Grammar instruction will be based on student writing. You must keep your compositions, drafts and revisions on a diskette for use in the electronic classroom and for future reference.
2) written responses to questions on student presentations
3) written version of final project (see below)

4.  Final Project:  Students will collaborate in groups of 4 on a final project to be presented orally to the class.  Each student will write a report of 5-7 pages on their individual contribution to the final project.  Presentations will be scheduled on Wednesdays and Fridays.  Students are required to schedule an appointment to rehearse the presentation with the instructor on the Monday before their presentation.

Failure to comply with these standards will result in a failing grade.
