Yacht Drafting
Yacht Drafting was a business idea that failed to bring in much income. I have done drafting while working as a dock worker. I did not do it for every job, but if there was a competition for who would get the contract to install a system it came in handy. It was a good way to convince the boat owner that we knew what we were doing.
It also came in handy when we were working on a boat for an owner who just bought the boat and did not know the boat systems well. We could easily draft a drawing showing the owner simple things, Here are all your through-hulls, here is what each one is for. At $70/hr it was only for a few owners. This was the premise for the business. Although at a much cheaper rate.
I got good response from brokers and system installers. Unfortunately not enough were interested to bring in enough to make it a full time business. It might have worked well if I targeted mega-yachts, with large budgets. These yachts typically come with draftings of all systems in the yacht for the live-on marine engineer. Any additional system added could have drafting to add to the boats collection. This might have worked if I had the right contacts. Perhaps I should have advertised in local maritime papers at $400 for a quarter page add. Got to spend money to make money.

Document your new systems. Drawings will not only aid and quicken maintenance but increase your yacht's value. Having system details at your fingertips will give you complete confidence.
Maintenance starts by knowing the details of your system well. Trouble shooting a misbehaving system is much easier with the plans are at your fingertips. Is voltage not getting to where it needs to go because of a broken hidden relay, or faulty switch? Where are the solenoids? Where is the intake thru-hull for your air-conditioning? Where are all your thru-hulls? Is it the starboard or port engine that recharges the house batteries? Answers come from complete knowledge of the system.
