Aquarium
This was a fortunate, impulse buy. One early summer day, we find ourselves walking through a pet store when the Wife suddenly cries out, "I want a fish tank, Hon'". So we bought a 10 gallon tank, and discovered one of the problems of fish and kids. Kids want to see fish NOW, fish want you to set tank up before you bring them home, nearest pet store is a 20 minutes drive in the wrong direction....kids win, fish are flushed! We bought a number of small goldfish (on the assumption that none of them would survive) to put into the tank when we got it set up. Please understand that we knew absolutely nothing about keeping fish at that time. Heather drove home, I studied the booklets for 20 minutes. At home we raced around to get things opened and cleaned, water treated, and everything together so that we could at least get the bags floating around before the fish ran out of air. It was pretty crazy around here for an hour or so, but finally the fish were getting acclimated to the water. One fish from that group survived, a few others have been brought in and are doing well. The tank is balanced and I only need to clean it every two weeks or so to maintain the clear and odor-free appearance. I am no expert on aquariums, I would not even say that I was more than an hobbyist, but I have managed to provide a few fish with a suitable environment for a while and am quite proud of myself. I am now on the lookout for larger tanks and gear at garage sales so may be expanding into new aspects of the hobby. Click here if you'd like to hear the Story of Deadtail. |
