The Mermaid Necklace

LuBelle Beads-The Mermaid Necklace

Splish, Splash I Was Takin' a Bath...Well, not really. I was watching the season premiere of Charmed, the one where Phoebe got herself turned into a mermaid. And somewhere among the gratuitous cleavage there was a sea hag who seemed to have a bead-a-licious shell/kelp necklace that of course sent the clayer's wheels churning.

Some of the shell beads in this are made from molds from real shells (like the center piece) and others are just formed by hand. I used real shells, a seaurchin shell, and a piece of fossil limestone rock to make texture plates that I then used to form beads. The last molded shell bead on the clasp is signed CYS '02.

Some of the seaweed or kelp is made form polymer clay, most of it is stitched seed bead fringe. There is also a "fish net", made from netted Size °15 seed beads.

There are also real abalone shell pieces in here, a molded starfish, a seahorse, glass beads, a peyote stitched sea urchin, Czech pressed-glass fish beads, and a larger glass fish bead.

The inside of the centerpiece has a Botticelli "Birth of Venus" charm, a glass pearl, and a piece of coral-stitched from 3-cut red iridescent seed beads.

My favorite bead in this is the dark purple strafish, in this picture you can see the underside of it.I have enough beads left-over to make a matching bracelet and I would like to make some seaweed earrings, but I haven't gotten to that yet.
