August 09

In June six of us had a fabulous weekend in Durham leading a workshop day on the Saturday with the Clayport Matters group. (Matters are people who make mats.) We started off with our introductory programme to give a bit of background, then alternated practice sessions and singalongs with talks from Innes on spinning and from Frances on the story of Harris Tweed. It was a tiring day, but very enjoyable.

Durham is beautiful, and it was good to have time to do a bit of sightseeing. It was particularly interesting to discover the old fulling mill by the river.

We had a special treat on the Sunday when some of us went to the nearby village of Shincliffe, not only to hear, but to see the church bellringers in action. This was fascinating they need such good coordination and concentration (just like waulking!). It occurred to us sitting there that no doubt the bells in the neighbourhood had rung just like this in 1346 to celebrate victory over the Scots invaders just up the road at Nevilles Cross! They made us very welcome anyway!

At the end of June a few of us made a joyful return visit to Auchindrain with the pupils of Arrochar Primary School which we visited earlier in the year. While the children got on with their drama activities we waulked and made rather brittle pancakes on the fire!

In July five of us had a great afternoon waulking at the Glasgow River Festival. Brilliant sunhine, happy crowds, lots of songs, eager joiners-in s math sin!
