Thinig mo bhodachan dhachaidh
Thinig mo bhodachan dhachaidh.
     Hro bhodachain h r
Thuirt e Furaichdinn fairaichdinn fa-rud.
     H a bh a bh a bh a bhan
     H a bh a bhan h a bh
Hri rri rri r a bhag
     O h ohao
     H ro bhodachain h r.
Thuirt e Furaichdinn fairaichdinn fa-rud
     Hro bhodachain h r
Thoir a nall an cuman brochain.
     H a bh etc.
Thoir a nall an cuman brochain.
S am bonnach mr s a robh am peice.
Siod am bodach, na robh Dia leis!
Bhrist e n guit is shrac e n criathar
S chagainn e bhr ghlas fo fhiaclan.
...
S truagh nach robh bodaich an domhain
Air mullach nan tonn s a chuan domhain
S mo bhodachan fhin nan teis-miadhoin.
My old man came home
     Horo ...
He said: "Furaichdinn ..."
     Hu a bhu ...

Fetch over the bucket of porridge

and the big bannock made with a peck of meal." (5 kg)
That's the old man, God be with him!
He broke the winnowing-fan, smashed the sieve,
and chewed the grey quern in his teeth.
I wish all the old men in the world
were on the waves in the deep sea,
and my own old man among them!
Thainig mo bhodachan dhachaidh
This is a fun song, which we like very much. Our version is from Tocher 18, as sung by Calum Johnston.

In her book,
A Life of Song, Marjory Kennedy-Fraser says she heard it as a clapping song in Barra, and that is how we use it.

Click
here to see a (very!) brief video clip of our performance at the 2006 Mod in Dunoon. It's the second video in the collection.
Frances is the soloist.
