There are some mods for the rifle, but these are maily limited (for legality in 4-H/ Boy Scout competiton) to smoothing and polishing the spring chamber, mainspring, and cocking mechanisim surfaces up. Trigger moda are verboten, as are mainspring changes. The rifle must maintain all it's origonal parts. on the model 99 Champion rifles, there was a special "JayCees" (Junior Chamber of Commerce) replacement trigger group. By dumb luck, I obtained one for my old 99. The unit dropped right in (totally legal for competiton part), and it really improved the sear release! These trigger groups are RARE! A modified 99 Champion is a fine shooting BB-gun, but can't hold a candle to the 499B! The 499B is so refined, and the barrel so exactlly manufactured that it truelly gives quite a few, lead pellet firing, rifled, air rifles at 10meters, a run for their money! The 499B absolutelly demands the use of the Special Daisy #1515steel airgun shot! NEVER use any other shot in one, as it will ruin the barrels tolerances!!! The use of this shot in other BB rifles is fruitless, as it depends on a blend of the close toleranced barrel and shot in combination. In the average BB-gun, it acts like any other BB. There is still batches of the old Daisy Bullseye Match BB's around. Using these close toleranced BB's in a Model 99 or pratically any other BB gun, can improve scores. *This ammo is close toleranced, but NOT good enough for use in a 499B! My 499B is for family training and personal uses. Since new, it has never been opened, nor gotten other than a light oiling of pivot points. It has some mainspring twang. I am considering applying some of Maccari's heavy tar to the spring to tame the slight vibration. However it just might reduce the rifles Factory Certified MV readout of 234 fps, +/- 2 fps.If I do the "tar", I also plan to polish the mainspring and it's chamber. The trigger group on the 499B wears in to a very good release, and once broken-in I doubt, much more than good lubrication could improve it. If one is secure with the use of a Gunsmiths stone set, It may be possible to speed-up the smoothing of the triggeror even slightlly omprove it. * Saftey first, and since this will be a "group use gun", trigger mods may be out of the question and unadvisable! The Valve needs NO modification and to try and do so would interrupt the superb consistancy. A mainspring change could increase the MV, but finding such a consistantlly preforming wire could prove nearlly impossible! perhaps Jim Maccari (The Springman) can wind a suitable wire into a 499 spec'd mainspring length, therefore raising the velocity... Frankilly the increase in MV would do little good for 5, 6, or 10m target use. His mainsprings are known for their fine smoothness, and this would definatelly be a plus. If you have a current 4-H membership, then you may be able to access that site for more modification information.I do not and could not. It would be interesting to discover the "Offical 4-H modification rulings! For any airgun fancier, no collection is complete without this fine shooting air rifle. To experience this smoothbores accuracy, true Match quality response, and unforgiving manner, is a treat! HTH, ZVP
