AVID CLASS POLICY

AVID classroom Procedures

     1.     Don't Disturb--Allow your teacher to teach and others to learn
      2.     Be prepared with school supplies and homework done.
      3.     Be respectful and kind to others.
      4.     Be courteous and try not to interrupt.
      5.     Know when it is appropriate to be out of your seat.
      6.     S.L.A.N.T. at all times in class.

AVID Grading - you will be graded based on your performance in the following categories:

      1. 
AVID/School Binder - graded weekley for neatness, organization, Cornell note-taking (25%)
      2. 
Student Agenda - graded daily.  Homework assignments for every class must be written in. 
             Students cross off work as they complete them in the agenda.  Parents must sign daily to show
             homework has been completed.  (15%)
      3. 
AVID tutorial - Preparation, participation, completion (20%)
      4. 
AVID projects/assignments/participation in field trips - writing, inquiry, collaboration, math, college
              research, careers, art. leadership (30%)
      5. 
Progress in all other academic classes - (progress reports from AVID and half way through the
          quarter) completion of assignments,citizenship, etc.  (10%)


AVID/School Binder- Since organization is a major goal in AVID, you will be required to maintain and keep and AVID/School three-ring binder.  Please purchase 10 subject dividers (can be found at office supply stores such as Office Depot)

Binder Grading: AVID binders graded every 2 weeks by tutors. Binders must meet the following criteria:
                        a.  neatness
                        b.  organization
                        c.  Cornell note-taking in all academic classes (2 pages per week per class worth 3 pts each)

Required Materials - Bring the following to the AVID class every day.

      1.  AVID/School binder
      2.  Student Agenda
      3.  Miscellaneous supplies - 2 pencils/pens, eraser, calculator, paper, etc.
      4.  Composition Book

Academic Expectations:

     *  Always come prepared to school
     *  Complete
all assignments in all classes on time.
     *  Maintain your current G.P.A. and work towards improving your G.P.A. throughout the year.
        (Remember most colleges  require at least a 3.5 G.P.A. to simply qualify for admission)
     *  You must have a "B" average in all of your classes in order to be recommended for the college-prep
         classes in high school.  (especially in the areas of math and language arts)
.   *  All 7th grade AVID students need to be recommended for Algebra 1 in 8th grade in order to remain in the
         AVID program for a 2nd year.

Citizenship:

    *  You are peer-leaders within the school.  You must maintain good behavior at all times.  You represent not
         only yourself,  are responsible for the reputation of
all the students within the AVID program.
     *  When you misbehave in other classes, you jeopardize  your ability to reason and negotiate with your
         teachers and administrators.  Be responsible for you actions at all times. ALWAYS let Mrs. Taylor know if
         there is a problem. 
     *  Try to maintain a positve attitude towards school, teachers, peers, etc. 
     *  If anyone commits  a major infraction of the school rules , a student may be exited immediately from the
         AVID program.  (all school suspensions of AVID students will be reviewed by Mr. Shirley & Mrs. Taylor)

Probation:
To stay in AVID, you must make a commitment to progressively change your academic standing and maintain excellent citizenship.  Students who do not meet the AVID objective will be placed on "probation" for a minimum
of 4 weeks. If the requirements for the contract are not met within the time frame, students can be exited from the program.
A student may be exited from the AVID program effective immediately for major infractions of the school rules and/or academic failure.
