Wimbledon is the story of Peter Colt (Paul Bettany), an ageing British tennis player, ready to put an ok, though thoroughly unspectacular tennis career behind him, after one more shot at Wimbledon. He looks set to go out in the early rounds, until he meets the rising star of American tennis, Lizzie Bradbury (Kirsten Dunst), and his performances (both on and off the court) miraculously improve. Despite the Wimbledon setting, this is not a film about tennis. This is just another romantic comedy of the tried and tested formula along the same lines of Notting Hill etc. and as a result, the film is generally enjoyable, though nothing more. You can imagine the writer (Adam Brooks) going through a What Makes a Decent British Romantic Comedy tick list while he was writing this script, and rest assured, all the boxes will have been ticked. But I for one am bored of these films. The tennis backdrop really adds nothing new to what weve seen before, and while Bettany is generally likeable, he doesnt quite have the charm of Hugh Grant. I probably would have really enjoyed this film, if it hadnt felt so old and done-before. As it is, it is still a decent film, and if romantic comedies are your thing, then Im sure you will enjoy it. Just dont expect anything you havent seen before.
