Im aware that a film about two middle aged guys going on a tour of the vineyards of California doesnt necessarily sound like the most thrilling of films. And this film isnt thrilling, or exciting, or edge of your seat pant wetting. It is, however, brilliant. The acting, directing, and story are all wonderfully crafted with care and attention taken to make an outstanding film. There are comedic moments, some laugh out loud funny, interspersed with moments of complete and utter desolation.
As stated previously, this film is about two guys going wine tasting. Miles (an outstanding Paul Giamatti) is the connoisseur taking his soon to be married friend Jack around California to show him the wineries. Jack has other ideas as he just wants to get laid before getting married, and is also determined to help Miles find a girl (Miles being a divorcee and not exactly Casanova). They hook up with two lovely ladies, and proceed to have a good time until Miles lets slip that Jack is getting married.
A carefully observed work that I think anyone could find both funny and heartfelt. Okay perhaps not people under 10.
