Well the trilogy has ended in quite spectacular fashion. Peter Jackson has pulled off another visual feast that can be enjoyed, I would surmise by most of the population. However, I dont think it is by any means the best of the trilogy, perhaps only because Im biased towards The Fellowship of the Ring, it being my favourite book, but it is a bit stopping and starting. Many people, especially those who have not read the books, might find that the end drags a bit, but it was always going to be a problem as that is what happens in the novel. I also feel it is quite badly edited with what happens to certain characters not really being explained. Nevertheless, this is nit-picking, its still a wonderful film to be watched by all, especially if you liked the first two parts.

As with all trilogies, it is exceptionally hard to produce an excellent finish. Peter Jackson has broken that rule and has clearly raised the bar.
The last film indeed has minor flaws, flaws that are confusing. But, the good outweighs the bad and the film becomes an impressive treat. The acting is superb by the stellar cast with special mentions to Elijah Woods, Sam and a personal favourite, Bernard Hill.
Watch it, or youll be missing something very exceptional.

What to say? Well, if youve read the books, you probably will find the experience less than fulfilling. But if youve not? Or in youve read them perhaps once or twice and dont remember the events as they should be, youll like it. There are some parts of it that will leave the movie fan wondering, like *shudders* what happened to that blonde chick? However the book fan might be tempted to say, Wheres Sam going? Overall its an enjoyable experience thats not to be missed, even if its just to laugh at some of the poorer bits.

EXTENDED EDITION Runtime: 250mins
What can I say but beautiful? Now owning all of the Extended Editions (EEs for short) I can defiantly say that the LOTR trilogy is a wonderful, glorious, fantastic, etc masterpiece of modern cinema. The additional scenes help to make the movie more understandable (i.e. you see Faramir and Eowyn fall in love, explaining their sudden coupledom at the end) and just better. The death of Saruman scene is great and very faithful to the book, though displaced from the Shire to the top of Orthanc. The Mouth of Saurons reinstatement makes a great scene, especially as they designed him so darn well. Genuinely an outstanding film and well up to standard, something that everyone should see at some point in their life.
Extras: Two discs of extras mean that theres always going to be a lot, though the ones here are still consistently interesting (I think). I havent watched the extras on the other EEs recently, but I would have to say that I think this is almost certainly the best offering. Fellowship had good extras, I found Two Towers slightly disappointing, but ROTKs are genuinely warming as you see everyone start to disband. Also present are some short films by another New Zealand film maker and friend of Peter Jackson, Cameron Duncan, who died in 2003 aged 17. The information about him and the films on the disc are a wonderful tribute to someone who lost his life to cancer.
