This film is entertaining, but is not going to change your life. It is a nice historical film that questions the lives that women in the 1950s wanted to lead, but does not really seem to apply to the general female population any more. However, it is well acted and the messages it conveys are important, if not especially new. The story is of a rather bohemian art history teacher, Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts), who goes to teach at a conservative girls college, and proceeds to try and change their view on life so they dont all end up as housewives, albeit intelligent ones. She also endeavours to open their eyes to new ways of thinking about art along the way. Yet the film incorporates more stories than just this one as some of the problems of the students are also examined. From relationships with teachers, to early and unhappy marriages, to misunderstandings and resolutions in love, the female students are varied and vicious at times, but never boring.
