Mediterraneo is a delightful film about eight Italian soldiers who are stranded on an idyllic Greek island during World War II. The Italians discover the community of the island and find themselves in Paradise. During their stay wonderful friendships and relationships with the community, from the priest to the village whore, are formed. The soldiers manage to fall in love with their new lives and easily forget about the war and ever returning to it. This film is very easy on the eye with its beautiful shots of beaches and all the luscious surroundings however Salvatores does not deny his audience of important themes such as war, love and pride for ones country. The film was a success and won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1992 and still manages to gain fans after so many years from its release.
