Lost in Translation, the second film by Sofia Coppola, is a lovely take on an American in Tokyo. The film revolves around Bob Harris (Bill Murray), a washed up actor who is in Tokyo for a week to shoot an ad. Staying in the same hotel is Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) who has been feeling alone and lost in Tokyo. When these two lost souls meet, a beautiful friendship blossoms as they both try to discover Japan as well dealing with their own feelings towards their chosen lives. The lead actors are brilliant (I cannot imagine any other actor around today who could do justice to the character Bob Harris the same way in which Bill Murray did). What is more pleasing about this film is the directors take on Tokyo. Coppola has put Japan on the map, and to the audience, Tokyo seems luminous, full of life and a great world to get lost in. Lost in Translation is a wonderful film its self to get lost in.
