| No offence to any of my collegues but British gangster movies are a cut above all others, layer cake has high standards to live up to following the likes of Lock stock, Snatch and Plunkett and Maclean. Fortunately it delivers this in droves with amazing cinematography, an excellent storyline and a cast that represents some of the best of British talent. Like its predessors it has a multi stranded plot which you really have to pay attention to in order to keep up with. There is a central - yet unnamed - character that we follow but the action continuously flicks between several different interconnected groups of characters, who unsurprisingly dont all remain alive by the end credits. There is slightly less guns n gore than other gangster films but the tense atmosphere created by multiple twists and turns in the plot easily makes up for it. One part of the film that seems slightly tacked on is the main characters love interest who appears in only a couple of scenes and serves no real purpose other than add a bit of sexual tension into the mix. In essence a thoroughly enjoyable film for both fans of the genre and general moviegoers, youll be hooked from the word go right through to the end. | ||
