After a number of successful films including O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the Coen Brothers have reteamed with George Clooney to produce the comedy Intolerable Cruelty . But this time round the spark is well and truly missing.
The film opens with a long and unnecessary introduction to the Donovan Donaly character played by Geoffrey Rush. There�s not really much point getting acquainted with him, as after this point he has little effect on the plot. Then the film moves into the main plot, that being the love story between divorce attorney Miles Massey (Clooney) and the gold digging Marylin Rexroth (Zeta-Jones).
Clooney and Zeta-Jones do an excellent job playing such poorly written characters. Unfortunately, the chemistry I expected the two great actors to have together was missing I had expected the Coen�s to do something clever or witty to get to the final conclusion, but no. Massey and Marylin engage in such ridiculous behaviour which is unbelievable for charters of their intelligence.
Although there are some scenes to admire, �Intolerable Cruelty� was a major disappointment
