Cited by the Wachowski brothers as one of the inspirations for the Matrix this film is an anim classic, with its influence extending into the world of video games such as Metal Gear Solid as well as movies. It is set in future Japan, where ordinary humans coexist with half human-half machine cyborgs and full fledged robots. The heroine is Major Motoko Kusanagi an agent of section 9, a sort of futuristic MI5 type government department. She on the trail of the puppet master a computer program which has somehow achieved sentience and is now pursuing an agenda of its own.

Not unlike the Matrix, the film combines periods of intense action with philosophical matters such as the nature of existence and artificial intelligence. The violence is quite graphic in parts so those who are not keen on gore should be forewarned. Not for everyone but an unpredictable plot and slick polished animation makes for an interesting, thought provoking film. Definitely worth watching.
