One aspect which war movies rarely venture is the often harsh and violent world of military training, which on of the reasons Full Metal Jackets stands apart from other Vietnam movies such as Apocalypse Now and Platoon classics in their own right.
The film opens at an unspecified period in the war on the track of a group of grunts just as they begin their training. At this point the action is mainly following private pile who is badly bullied by his drill instructor for his lack of aptitude at basic military skills. This soon turns into physical abuse by fellow recruits who are angry as they are being punished for his mistakes. Slowly his ability starts to pick up even to the point where his drill instructor praises him. However this is at the expense of his sanity which has rapidly gone downhill as a result of his treatment, climaxing at his graduation.
At this point the action switches to joker a squad mate of pile and focuses his experiences in Vietnam. Another interesting point here is that even he is now the hero of the film he was one of the people who bullied pile during his training. From this point on the film becomes much more like its cohorts showing how war can turn ordinary people into brutal and ruthless killers, although still very watchable I felt it was a bit of anticlimax after the earlier action.
A finely crafted movie, especially for fans of war movies with a bit of extra depth to them. A film for dark days and long nights.kinda convenient given the weather.
