This film is wonderful. It is certainly the best film that I have seen this year. I saw it for a second time and found it just as moving, bittersweet and entertaining as I did the first time, I may even go as far as forking out some money for it when its released on DVD. I was a bit worried at first of the thought of Jim Carrey doing something serious but his performance leaves nothing asking. There is humour in the saddest of places, thought-provoking ideas where you wouldnt necessarily expect them. The ideas raised about what could actually happen if we had the capacity to wipe unhappy relationships from our minds are difficult to cope with. A glimpse is given into a relationship that is not going well, and so ends with one of the partners, Kate Winslets Clementine, removing all knowledge of the other, Carreys Joel. In revenge Joel decides that he will undergo the same procedure. The film is mainly based about Joels memories as they are being wiped, and the realisation that he doesnt want to lose what he had, too late for it to be possible. The cinematography is great, always interesting, intimate but also surreal, appropriate for something taking place inside a persons mind. The music reflects the differing moods perfectly and the acting is truly superb. I didnt really find it uplifting, the ending being ambiguous, but in all ways it is terribly affecting.

I loved this film when it came out in the cinema and I still love it now. I would say one of the best films this year, if not the best film of the year. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is charming and heart wrenching as it follows Joel Barishs (Jim Carrey) relationship with Clementine (Kate Winslet). It is unconventional in almost every way and refreshing for the fact. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet both essentially play against type and, Carrey in particular, give outstanding performances. A wonderful film to return to.

Extras: Considering the price of this DVD, it isnt surprising that you dont get many extras on it, but what is there is watchable and pleasant enough. The conversation with Carrey and Gondry is interesting and has some good snippets from behind the scenes. The deleted scenes are interesting to see, and the sic video quite amusing. However, in buying this disk youre really getting it for the film, rather than anything else.
