Elephant is based on the Columbine High School shootings that took place in 1999. The audience is introduced to all the stereotypical figures one would find in a high school, the cool kid whos a photographer, the geek, the pretty girls who eat salads and throw up after, the good-looking boy and the dreamy girl. The two killers are also introduced, as is their homosexual relationship, their passion for reading and playing the piano and watching documentaries on Hitler. All these factors (including them being the boys who sit at the back of the classroom getting things thrown at them) do not count as to why they would do such a monstrous thing, which is why the film is so distressing. Many will find the pace and the direction strange but the film draws you just before there is a huge rip into an ordinary day at high school leaving you horrified. This is a sad film, which becomes more haunting knowing that it actually happened in real life.
