This film is an adaptation of the novel by Eca de Queiroz. The story is of a recently ordained priest in Mexico who is sent from the temple to do help Father Benito (Sancho Garcia). While he is there Amaro (Gael Garcia Bernal) discovers many things about the priest whom he is with, that not only does he receive financial help from the leading drugs trafficker but has also been having a long term affair with Sanjuanera, the lady who feeds them. Amaro then faces difficulties with his faith and dedication a when he falls in love with Sanjuaneras daughter, Amelia (Ana Claudia Talancon).
This film is brilliant and is well worth watching as it deals with issues that are very controversial which grabs the audiences eyes. The characters are brought alive by the superb acting and you really feel for them and even angry with them and in my opinion that is always the make of a great film.
