When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth Zombie movies have never been considered the high point of cinema whether on an intellectual level or any other you can think of. Dawn of the dead is no exception. It certainly doesnt hang around with absolutely nothing in the way of setting up or back-story before the first zombies leap onto the screen approximately two minutes into the movie. From there are its a case of run, kill or be eaten for the heroine Ana and the group of human of human survivors she meets up with along the way. Things do not get any more complicated than that up until the films predictable ending; no secret plots, no heroes, no villains, simply survival. Its fairly decent as zombie movies go; effectively capturing the bleak and besieged feeling the characters experience as they remain locked up shopping mall, their hopes of rescue diminishing and the zombie horde waiting outside. Its a significant improvement on the last attempt at the genre made by video game turned movie; Resident Evil a couple of years ago. Its bad in the way that all zombie movies are bad with one dimensional characters and very thin plot but accept that and youll find a fairly watchable horror movie. P. Parkinson
