The only thing I knew about this movie before I saw it was that it contained comedy duo Jay and Silent bob (modern day versions of Bill and Ted type stoner dudes). So the storyline turned out to be something of a surprise. It focuses on two comic book writers Holden McNeil and Banky Edwards, during a convention Holden meets and quickly falls for a fellow artist Alyssa Jones. His hopes of a relationship initially seem dashed after he finds out that she is a lesbian, though this is much to the delight and relief of Banky, his friend of some 20 years.
However Alyssa soon comes to find him again to apologise for her rather sudden revelation and the pair quickly become close friends. She tells Holden about her young life and what made her decide to turn gay, helping to expand Holdens views on life in the process. Banky, a complete homophobe is incensed at this and does everything in his power to drive them apart.
To tell any more would spoil the plot but this is a finely made film delving into such matters as prejudice, stereotyping, and the different types of love people can feel for each other. The ending is unexpected but a welcome change from the norm and a note of humour is kept throughout helping to retain a certain feel good factor. One for anybody who can appreciate a good movie (with a sprinkling of toilet humour).
