Although Colorguard is by definition a sport due to its physical and competitive aspects, it is also considered an art. The performers use the elements of expression, and their equipment to tell a story. The music, and scenery set the stage, and the performer completes the show.
Introduction
The LSU Colorguard is comprised of 32 females for the 2002-2003 football season. We perform only during the fall semester. Routines are both choreographed and taught by the Captains. All Colorguard members are paid $640 for the fall semester. Colorguard members are expected to maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. As a side note, the Tiger Band section with the most people maintaining a cumulative 4.0 GPA comes from the ladies in the Colorguard section. :)
Auditioning process
Tryouts are held the Saturday of the second full week of April. Auditions start at 9:30 am and run anywhere from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Everyone who wishes to try out is expected to choreograph a routine that is one minute and thirty seconds long. Routines should show mastery of basic flag skills, and basic performance abilities. The second part of the auditioning process is aptly named the "on-the-spot" routine. This section ascertains the applicants ability to learn a routine in an hour and perform the routine without relying on other members. Applicants should wear clothing that flatters the figure, such as black jazz pants and a nice top.
