| Brak bush: A shrub whose leaves have a purgative effect when chewed; traditionally, branches of it are nailed above the doorways of houses during the "Waiting Hand" to discourage the entry of bad luck into the house for the New Year. (note: the waiting hand is explained in the Gorean Calander section) Carpet plant: A plant of the rainforest area inland of Schendi having tendrils that are used, for example, in binding or bandaging a wound. Dina: A small short stemmed flower indigenous to hillsides, sometimes called the 'slave flower', it is often used as a design for slave brands, and sometimes used as a slaves name. Fan Palm: Found in the jungles of the Schendi, more than 20ft high it spreads it's leaves in the form of an open fan, an excellent source of water, as much as a liter can be collected at the base of each leafs cupped stem. Flahdah: A tree of the Tahari having lanceolate leaves; the trunk leans like that of a palm tree. Flaminium: A large scarlet flower having 5 petals. Flower Tree: Found in Turia, it has lovely dangling loops of interwoven blossoms which hang down from curved branches. In pleasure gardens, the trees are cultivated so that the clustered flowers emerge in a subtle delicate pattern of shades and hues. Hogarth Tree: A tree of the Barrens named after one of the early explorers of the area. They tend to grow on the banks of small streams or muddy sluggish rivers. Because they are so similiar to poplar trees of earth, Tarl imagines they may have been transported to Gor. Ka-la-na Tree: A tree with very strong yellow wood, used for making bows, the fruit of the ka-la-na is used to make ka-la-na wine. Kanda: A plant which grows in desert regions of Gor. It's roots are extremely poisonous, but the leaves can be rolled and formed into strings which are chewed or sucked to produce a stimulant effect. Katch: Foliated leaf vegetable. Kort: A large, brownish-skinned, sphere-shaped vegetable, usually some 6inches in width. The interior is yellowish, fibrous and heavily seeded. Larma/applelike: Single seeded apple-like fruit, a variation of the succulent juicy larma with a single seed, commonly called pit fruit. Larma/Succulent: Fruit with a hard shell; brittle and easily broken, which encloses a fleshy endocarp, juicy and delicious. When a female is referred to as a 'larma' it is meant that her frigid exterior conceals a quite different interior. Larma or other fruit may be offered by a kneeling slave to her Master in a quiet plea for His sexual use of her. Leech Plant: A hemovorous plant that fastens two hollow, fang like thorns into it's victim, through which it can suck the blood that nourishes it. Liana Vine: A rain forest plant which can be used as a source of drinking water. Melon: In a Tahari market, described as a yellowish red-striped sphere. Needle Tree: A tree in the Thentis region, whose oils are used in perfumes. Mul Fungus: Bland whitish fibrous vegetable-like material which is the main food of muls. Palm Trees: More than 1500 vareities of plam trees exist in the rain forest, one of which is the fan plam, more than 20ft high, and spreads it's leaves in the form of an open fan, it is an excellent source of pure water, as much as a liter of water can be stored by the large cup-shaped leaves at the base of each leaves stem. Rence Plant: A tufted reed-like plant that grows in the marshes, it has long thick roots about 4 inches thick, which lie under the surface of the water with smaller roots that sink down to the mud with stems 15 to 16 feet long with a single floral spike used for making paper, which is then exported all over Gor. Each and every part of the rence plant is used for making something. Rence/Pith of: edible part of the rence plant, either raw or cooked. Rence pith and fish are the dietary staples of the rence growers. Also sometimes used in caulking. Rep: A whitish fibrous matter found in the seed pods of a small reddish woody bush used to make rep-cloth. Sa-Tarna: (life daughter)....A staple Gorean grain, described as yellow shafts growing in rows in a field. Shrub/Kanda: A shrub of the Gorean desert, a lethal poison can be extracted from it's roots while chewing the leaves has an addictive narcotic effect. Shrub/Kes: A shrub whose salty blue secondary roots are a main ingredient in sullage, a Gorean soup. Sim Plant: A rambling, tangled vine-like plant with huge, rolling leaves, raised in the pasture chambers of the Nest. Sip Root: A bitter root whose extract is the active ingredient in slave wine. Sul: A large, thick-skinned, starchy yellow-fleshed root vegetable. It is the staple of the Gorean diet. Talender: A delicate yellow-petaled, fragrant meadow flower, when worn in a slave girl's hair, it is a symbol of deep submission and emotional attachment to her owner. Telekint: A plant of the Tahari; it's roots, mashed and mixed with water provide a red dye. Tem-wood Tree: A tree in Turia, found in groves; linear, supple and black. Teslik: A plant whose extract is the main ingredient in breeding wine. Tor Shrub: Translated as the 'bright shrub' or the 'shrub of light' because of it's abundant bright flowers either yellow or white depending on the variety. It flowers in the fall. Tur Tree: Described as reddish and large trunked it is found in Turia. The realm of Turia is said to have taken it's name from a solitary Tur tree planted long ago on the plains. Tur-pah: A vine-like tree parasite, with curled, scarlet ovate leaves, which are edible and an ingredient found in sullage, a Gorean soup. Vangis: A type of produce found in markets, a detailed description not available. Vegetables/Common Gorean: These are common earth vegetables found on various parts of Gor, listed with their annotations; mushrooms, beans, turnips, carrots, onions, peas, cabbage, peppers, and garlic. Verminium/Thentis: A bluish wild-flower commonly found on the lower ranges of the Thentis mountains, used in perfumes. Verr Grass: A brownish grass that grows, stubbornly, in the shaded spots of the Tahari. Violet Grass: Patches of stalky grass, one of several hues, used in pleasure gardens in Turia. |
