A Little More About Me

As you can tell from the background of the page, I come from China (map). I was born in May 1965, in Xiaogan, Hubei Province (see map). My hometown is very near Wuhan, the capital of the province, it's at the centre of China. But I live and work in Beijing. Here you can find a more detailed CV of mine (also available in pdf). I am not always so serious as you see from the photo on the previous page, sometimes I laugh heartly, sometimes I do some meditation in a lotus posture. And I like painting also.

My name is Luo (see Chinese here) Shengping. In Chinese " Sheng " (see Chinese here) means "sage", "saint", "divine" or "sacred", while " ping " (see Chinese here) means "ordinary", "normal" or something like this. So "Shengping" means "divine and ordinary at the same time", i.e., to live a divine life in daily life, or in zen words, to live in the world but without letting the world live in you (not disturbed by the world). It's like lotus which live in the dirty mud but their flowers give out the purest fragrance. It's really a difficult aim, yes? But I try to live such a life.

"The person who can live in the world without letting the world live in him is a clever one."---A Zen saying

"To experience without intention is to sense the world; To experience with intention is to anticipate the world."---Lao Tzu

When you anticipate but remain with no intention, you are detached. A detached person is a free one, a liberated one.

I work in the department of Environmental Control and Life Support Systems(ECLSS), Institute of Space Medico-Engineering(ISME), Beijing. Our institute is at the north west of Beijing, very near the Summer Palace and Yuanmingyuan. If you have been to Beijing, you surely have visited Summer Palace, it's one of the most famous and most beautiful scenic points in Beijing and in China. Ok, from our institute to there, it's just 10 minutes by bike.

ECLSS is about supporting astronauts living in space. It's a vital part of manned space flight. If you want to know more about it, here are some good places to visit. If you want to hear the real voice of an astronaut and to write to them, you can come to here or there.
