Great strides have been made in the last century and now they're happening in leaps and bounds. Science's developments in technologies such as UltraSound, CAT Scan, Magnetic Resonance and Digital Imaging, and microscopic surgery have given us an eye into the unseen working realms of biology. Now that we are able to break down and decipher the human DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) into it's smallest constituencies (and this is going to take awhile to complete), we have been led down a long hallway with many doors of opportunities to explore. Curing, halting a disease in it's progress or even, through gene manipulation, preventing a disease altogether, are just some of the highlights. We will also be able to (and in some cases are able) to restore, rebuild, refine, duplicate, modify or alter the anatomy or biological structure of any living matter. This brings us all to many ethical decisions. To what lengths will we allow ourselves to go and to what ends will it achieve? |
