A Note From Our President…

Dear Fellow Quilters:

Where do I begin--I'm so afraid I'll leave an important point out.

I was so glad Carolyn scheduled a work night for our August meeting.  We accomplished so much and I appreciate all your participation and enthusiasm for the quilt show.  You will probably receive this newsletter just prior to the show and I hope each of you are as excited as I am about seeing all the wonderful people who will come to view our hard work on display.

There are some who are unable to participate in the show due to health reasons (theirs or family) and I know the rest of us will do all we can to make our show run smoothly and "appear" to be no effort at all.

Be sure to acknowledge the sponsors (listed elsewhere in this newsletter) and let them know how much we appreciate their support.  Also---check out all the local banks and see our auction quilts on display.  They're beautiful.

A huge THANKS (and it's not near enough) goes out to Deanna and Billie Ruth for all the planning, plotting, persuasion and persistence in making the quilt show what it is going to be.  It takes a few hardy souls to lead and organize and then we all end up looking so good!!  I know their shoes probably need new soles because of the many steps they've made for our show.  Thanks girls--we do appreciate you so much!!

Another thanks goes out to Dee Harder, Bettie Hammock, Joy Rutledge, Pat Pillard and Rose Hillsamer for allowing us to submit their beautiful quilts for the Texas Traditional Treasurers exhibit at the Houston Quilt Show.  I wish all could be shown and I know we are proud of these ladies.

For all of you who have made quilts for the auction--Pat Sparks and Gwen Karney, Joy Rutledge, Pat Powell and Donna Rankin, Elaine Sprague and Roberta Vanderburg--thanks for all your hard work.  I know it will pay off--I hope to the tune of 2X what we did last year!!

If you have made plans to be a part of the group going to the fair on the 24th--please let me know.  I need to make a list of those going and what you are going to demo so we can try to cover as many areas as possible.   We will only "be on duty" for 2 hours and I feel this is a great honor for our guild to be asked by the Texas Department of Agriculture to do this.  We are having aprons embroidered with our logo so we will look very professional when we go.

When we meet again on the 27th, we'll need to get a few volunteers to hang quilts and sit and sew at "Harvest Days" at Heritage Park on October 3rd.  Since we will have just given away our donation quilt--we won't have chances to sell--just rocking and sewing and talking.  This is an easy one--can you help?

I want to thank each of you in advance for all of the hard work I know will be done in the next couple of weeks.  Remember that this is neither for me nor for the board.  This is your guild and your efforts will make our show what it can be.

You make it a joy to be your president!

                    Sincerely, Jan

Vice President of Programs…Carolyn Tosh

Our big event is almost here, and a big THANK YOU to everyone who has worked so hard in all areas of getting ready for the show.  The auction quilts that are being finished are just beautiful!  Billie Ruth and I are trying hard to get them displayed in all the banks and some businesses.  Photos are being taken of the quilt entries....Wow!  Patsy Crist is completing the new Guild cookbook......Vendors keep calling to try to have a booth......Boutique items are being priced to get ready for selling..... Quilt bindings are hastily being sewn on......Workers are being assigned their schedules......All this is wonderful and a satisfying culmination of at least nine month's work and many, many, many details with new ideas always popping up!  .......One new item:  the Guild is in the process of having official aprons with the logo sewn on (Thanks, Peggie!) to wear at the Quilt Show and also to the State Fair of Texas (see Jan's article).  The aprons will belong to the Guild, kept in the storage trailer, and used at various events such as the garage sale, show, etc.  For the show, you may wear one of your own aprons, or you may take turns wearing one of the Guild aprons.  We hope to have the twenty aprons ready.   REMEMBER:  Bring your scissors for sharpening by Curtis from the "Nana's Parcels" booth.    BE LOOKING FOR:  our big blue banners ......THE 2004 QUILT SHOW IS COMING TO TOWN

Design Committee Report…Pat Pillard

We do plan on having the quilt binding on by the Sept meeting. However the focus this month is The Quilt Show! Bet that surprises no one

. Tickets: Please turn in all your tickets ASAP The tumbler will be at the show. Remember to bring any unsold ones also as they may be needed for sales at the show.

Video. As mentioned at the last meeting, we would like all members who have a quilt/quilts in show to tell on the video about their own quilts. Just pick one please if you have several. I can’t tell you the exact time yet, but it will be Fri. Please call or email me if you are willing to do this. Since we have a lot of members now I can’t call every one. This way you tell me if you are interested. And I hope you will. Just think how much more interesting our video will be with all participating. Please. You cannot imagine how many people wrote nothing in the comments about their quilt. Makes it much harder to talk about these quilts.  Remember this is for our history too. Actually this is the primary reason for the video. The young man who did the video last year will be doing   it again this year. His name is Owen Bickford, Jr. and he will sell you a copy. If you saw last years, you know he did a great job. I will try not to be so nervous this year. Anyway the CD will be $20 and the VHS $15. He will be taking orders. You might like to have your own. Please support us on this and let me hear from you so I can make a schedule. Of course with this kind of thing, it is hard to say how long each will take. Owen said he would most likely edit each one down to about one and a half minutes. The sooner you let me know you are willing the better for us all.

Fabric, ladies we have fabric. 100 Yards! From P&B Textiles. I will bring to next meeting for you to see and to place in our cupboard. Some backing, some baby, some brights. And I will also bring a Thank You for us all to sign. I let them know we received the package, but we will all want to say thanks, not every day we are given 100 yards of new fabric.

Hope to hear from you about your quilt.

Hello Dear Ladies:

Hasn't time flown this month? Everyone is gearing upward for the "Quilt Show".  I got all of the black printing back from 'Advantage' last week.  I've been making color copies here at home.  The color process is very slow on my little printer--but looks good.

Dear, dear Cookbook Helpers:

I have always heard the expression 'Crème of The Crop'.  Now when I think of how hard you all work, I can't help but think of this expressional quote.  Thank ALL OF YOU who so diligently worked non-stop during our 3-day assembly line cookbook production.  As you all found out it was a big, big task -- but again, with a joint group effort it all came together.  How good it felt to see all those completed books on day 2 of production.   I hope you all up-date your resumes, in case us retirees need to -- or decide to go back to work. Or, if still working, maybe you may want to change jobs.  Ha!  Ladies, you were great and so much fun!  I thank you for your help, enthusiasm, and glad heart in this joint effort.  You all never cease to amaze me.

WORKERS WERE:  Cecilia Anderson, Dee Harder, Deanna Hasten, Louise Hill, Shirley Hogan, Jimmie Hendricks, Jan Morrison,  Pat Pillard, Nancy Schrimsher,  Sherry Shockley, Billie Ruth Stanbridge, Emma Williams, Peggie Wilkinson.

Thanks also to Jan Morrison & Peggie Wilkinson for even taking work home!

Hugs & kisses to all you.

Cookbooks will be for sale at the Boutique for $10.00 each.  What is left over I will bring to the Guild meeting.  See you ladies at the Quilt Show!

Hostesses last month were:  Pat Pillard coordinator, Pat Powell, Lequida Jennings, Sandra Pundt, and Nancy Schrimsher.  Ladies you all did a super job.  Pat Pillard thank you for being the coordinator.  Your  'Back to School' Theme was fun and creative.   Good job as always!!

Hostesses for Sept. 27th meeting are:  Sherry Shockley - coordinator, Joy Rutledge, Pat Sparks, Elaine Sprague, Patsy Crist.  Look for some more great food!  -- And a surprise or two.

Quilt Show Hospitality Food Volunteers:  Thank you to all volunteers.  I will send a REMINDER letter or e-mail to each volunteer.  The help of you precious ladies is so appreciated.

Again, thank you to Donny Foster, Owner of Vittles in the Outlet Mall for graciously volunteering 2 days donations of:  sandwiches, desserts, bottle water, and ice.  We appreciate your sponsorship.  And thank you to Billie Ruth for acquiring such a wonderful sponsor.  This donation has taken a big workload off the ladies and is appreciated.

This has really been a "thank you" message this month.   I sincerely thank all of you for giving of your valuable time and help.

After much discussion and Jan's approval, we have reduced the monetary amounts in order to double the number of winners we can recognize.  There are so many outstanding quilts, I think we'll all appreciate the expanded recognition.

The Donation Quilt is hanging from the balcony at City National Bank downtown.  As of September 1, auction quilts were hung in all of the banks and they look gorgeous.  Be sure and get by Alliance bank and see the two hanging from the balcony.   What Gwen and Pat Sparks did with old donated pieces of quilts boggles the imagination.    Award sponsorship signs are up in the sponsoring businesses.  Another one of Elaine's wall hangings is up in Plain & Fancy.  Jan says the Tie Quilt is stunning and should be finished any day and available for show.   We plan for the auction quilts to be shown on Channel 2, and another radio interview with Enola is scheduled for continued coverage of the quilt show.  For the last week before the show, Vittles and Factory Outlet will be running adds throughout the week on Channel 2 in support of our show.   All of the banners we used last year will be up again as of Labor Day weekend, as well as the billboard on I-30 advertising the Fall Festival and the Quilt Show.  After September 11, even more of Deanna's creative signs will be up.  Is this not great, or what? "I'll see you at Set Up and, if not there, at the Show.  If this is your first time to participate, you'll quickly see why everyone is needed.  It's work, BUT it's fun.........Billie Ruth

Re: Work Assignments

This is a welcome to everybody, regardless of what your assignments are.    When you are free or have some down time, wander over to the Elaine's quilt frame that will be in the center of the gym for any of the members, as well as anybody interested, who wishes to try their hand.  Carol Lamprecht had pieced the top and was gracious enough to make it available for us to work on.  It would great if enough people worked consistently that at the end of two days, it would be finished for her to take home and bind.  Carol will be there to tell us how she wants it quilted.
