October 2003
Hello Ladies,
I can't believe we're this near the end of the year, and yet, things seem as frantic as the previous month, what with Heritage Park, Autumn Trails in Winnsboro and our big Ashbacher Workshop. And, in between all this, the nominating committee is busy getting new officers, and others will be evaluating our Fall Festival Quilt Show.
I hope all of you have answered positively if you have been called to fill an office or chairmanship. You know of course, the committee will welcome volunteers. If you are interested in serving in any way, please call chairman Pat Powell (# in directory). Everybody's participation is so important and is so greatly appreciated. Our success and fun always depends on all of us.
I'm so thrilled with the number of new members who are joining us. Please help them feel welcome. Our Guild is large enough that even all of our old members don't know everybody. Imagine what it is like for those who step in brand new? Brand new members, get involved. That's how you get to know everybody else. Don't feel fearful that you won't know what to do. We'll be happy to show you and we need everybody.
Your President.........Billie Ruth Standbridge
Vice President….Jan Bartley
What
a great job Treva Mahan did introducing us to the
string quilt method! I loved her
stories, and I’m ready to get my strips out and see what happens!
Our
program for October will be a work night to help catch us up on youth donation
quilts. I have enough fabric for 10
quilts – I just need you to bring sewing machines, rotary cutters and mats,
pins, large pieces of leftover batting and spray adhesive if you have any. Also, if you have any fabric you want to work
on…GREAT! The more we can accomplish, the better!
See
you on the 27th!
Special Events….Deanna Hasten
What a great quilt show, and
many many thanks to all of you! With such a big
success, we have the opportunity to apply for a grant from our local tourism
committee, which disperses funds from the H.O.T. (Hotel Occupancy Tax) in
Hopkins County. We are asking for a grant to help with next year's show,
specifically the advertising expense. Be listening for news on
this! We will be listed in the 2004 North Texas Tourism Council book, with 30,000 printed, and we will also have a
one-fourth page advertisement regarding the quilt show. Our big applause
for David and Rose Hillsamer, who are spending lots
of hours designing the ad, and also a small flyer for Frank Smith, Director of
Tourism, to hand out during his conventions this next year. Our guild is
reaching out all over Texas and beyond!

In 1999, M.J. Fielek brought this wonderful cake to our night bee
2 sticks of butter at room
temperature
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
5 eggs at room temperature
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon almond flavoring
1 Tablespoon vanilla
Mix together and put in
prepared bundt pan.
Put as much poppy seed as you want on top and swirl through. Bake 325 degrees for one hour.
Note: Pat adds her own flavor to this recipe:
1 teaspoon rum flavoring
(flavoring girls, NOT the real thing!)
1 teaspoon coconut flavoring
1 teaspoon butter flavoring
Enjoy!
