October 2002

From the President:

Hello Ladies,

What a schedule our guild has had and is still expecting. One last Hoorah for Deanna and her co-chair, Pat Pillard, for the huge success of the Quilt Show.  It was hard work but, WOW, did we have a good time. Deanna has taken the meaning of Events Chairperson to unexpected heights.

I realize I’m statring a little ahead of time but I want you to remember NOVEMBER: our guild meeting will be at the Sulphur Springs Public Library. We will have an informal reception/dedication of our completed wall hangings that will be adorning the walls of the children’s stort area. I think you will be thrilled with the overall impression. The reception will be from 5:00-6:00 with the dedication part lasting 15 minutes, 5:45-6:00…. I want to thank all of you who have contributed blocks for the panels and those of you who helped assemble, quilt and bind. This truly has been a group effort, but out of our group, I especially want to thank Sylvia Martin and Dale Manning, who contributed more than 40 hours each toward the completed project. Dale, a new member this year, had never quilted a thing, but learned the process of putting blocks together and sewed the binding on several of the panels. Thank you Mary Massey for your binding mockup that you used in the Round Robin teaching. I just keep passing that around.

At 6:00 we will go into the Library community room for our refeshments and program.  Remember, even though our official starting time is 6:30, we can sign in and start eating at 6:00.  That way we lose no time lining up and have maximum time to eat and chat.

Regarding our Nominating Committee, concern was relayed to me that I had not followed the bylaws in appointing the committee members. After reviewing the bylaws and minutes going back to the beginning of our guild, indeed the bylwas do refer to the nominees being elected. Has this been done every year? No. They’ve been nominated and elected, and they’ve volunteered and been appointed.. Under Article 5.08, the bylaws state that “ the President may create any temporary committee for a specific purpose, which will cease to exixt after its specific function is completed.” I believe that this is an accurate description of the Nominating Committee, however due to the delay this has created, the committee will not have a slate of officers to present at the October meeting. Therefore, I will be asking the Guild to approve the Committee along with the tow alternates, Ethel Winton and Wanda Beaty.  This will throw the functions of the Committee off schedule, and since we need to install officers at the December meeting, I will be asking for a recommendation and approval to present the slate of officers and vote on them at the November meeting. I’ll appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Our Quilt Show at Heritage Park gets better every year. The Children’s Corner was the most successful we’ve every had, thanks to Danna Darty and her children. Nothing like children helping children. Deanna had prepared quilting objects for 40 and they used 39.  While I can’t give you a specific count, I do believe there were actually more boys than girls participating. On the other side of the Wilson house, Sharon Callahan and Elaine Sprague were baking their brains in the sun while tackling everbody to buy a raffle ticket, and I might add, very successfully.   One of the 1st helpers to show up was a newcomer from last month, Misty Thurtman from Wionnsboro. What a thrill it is to have a newcomer like that. She did everything from helping to hang quilts to selling tickets and providing her sewing box for our cash box. Thanks everybody who came to help. It really isn’t a chore. We see so many people we know and I’ll be suprised if we don’t get several new members from this event.

A new event that is being added this year, thanks to Pat Pillard, who acquainted us with the Cotton Jubille that will have taken place at the Cotton Museum in Greenville. She indicates that sometjing like 15,00 people come thru during the 2 day event. So keep your fingers crosses and maybe we’ll find this a very profitable effort for one more opportunity to sell our raffle tickets.   Our ladst event to sell raffle tickets this month weill be Autumn Trails in Winnsboro. We had a request from Sylvia Martin’s niece, who is marketing director for the bank, to display quilts in the bank and our selling table is in front of the bank. Due to her early request, the information regarding our raffle quilt and display, we were part of the tourist literature that went out with the advertising of Autumn Trails.   What a month!!! We will be doing the drawing at the October guild meeting for this fabulous quilt.  Thank you committees! I’ll see you at Guild… bring a friend.

From Vice President:

The program for October 28th will be Barabara Booth from Terrell. She will show her “Water Color” quilts. She will demonstrate how to make the changing colors into a beautiful quilt using your material.

Looking ahead to our December meeting, which will be held on the 9th of December, since there is so little time from the November meeting, I would like to remind you about the gift exchange we will have.  This year we would like yo ask you to make something homemade to exchange or bring a ready made gift valued at $5 to exchange.  Please do not feel pressured to make something, we just want to have fun at a very important time of the year.

Also be thinking about a decorating theme for our tables as we will explain at our meeting in October. I know this may seem early to talk about Christmas, but we all need time to prepare.

Thanks to our quilters that served us such great food in September. Our October hostesses wil be: Roberta Vanderburg, Elaine Sprague and Betty Hammock.   I need 3 volunteers for the November meeting—currently there is no one signed up.  The recipe will be available on the back table due to the length of the newsletter this month.

Special Events:

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks  to all the guild members for your enthusiasm, cooperation, and support for making our third annual quilt show such a fantastic success… and so much fun!  Just the comments alone from show visitors make such an event worth all the time and effort… and yes, sleepless nights! My special appreciation to the wonderful quilt show committee for their committment to making the show the very best possible.  The donation ticket sa;es and attendance were far above our highest expectations, which truly are an indication of an interest in quilting in our community and surrounding areas (even as far away as Hot Springs Village, Ark.) and the couple who read about our show in Quilter’s Newsl;etter. It is a pleasure to work with each one of you as we preserve and promote the art of quilting together!

The Viewer’s Choice ballots (all 160 of them) have been counted and the results will be announced at the October guild meeting. There  were several tie votes, so more ribbons will be awarded. A special showing of the winners is being planned for the Novcember meeting which will be held at the Sulphur Springs Public Library.

As you know, we normally make blocks for the President each year.  This year I would like to alter this tradition just slightly—Billie Ruth’s daughter, who lives in Italy, will be getting married sometime in the next year.  As Billie Ruth has been and will continue to be strapped for time, what with her mother’s health, family responsibilities and guild acxtivities—I thought w could help her out by making Crazy Quilt blocks for a wedding quilt for her daughter.  I will have packets with size, basic instructions and a piece of fabric we would like to have used in all the blocks. This will be a good

way for those of you who have never done the crazy quilt technique to learn on a smaller scale.  All completed blcoks can be forwarded to Elaine or myself.  If you have any questions please feel free to call me at 903-945-3483.  Roberta Vanderburg.
