November 2002

From the President:

Well ladies, the year is fast coming to a close with our last 2 events and what a year it has been.  You’re a fantastic group and I can’t think of a more rewarding group of friends to work with.  Thank you Roberta for coming up with the idea of making the crazy quilt for my daughter as a wedding gift. Unbelievable!! I know she and Simone will love it. I know I do!

Speaking of the Crazy Quilt, I have never made on and perhaps some of you are in the same boat I’m in. At least I spoke with several of you who have not made one.  For this reason, I’m bringing several books and magazines with beautiful picturesd that I will put on display at our November Guild meeting. If you have some other books or pictures that you wouldn’t mind sharing, I would appreciate it if you could bring yours also.  Deanna will be bringing a crazy quilt throw to display. She and others (Pat Sparks, Gwen Karney, and Colleen Hines) .. (did I miss anybody?) who attended the Houston Quilt Show learned a new and faster wat to put them together. Deanna will bring some copies of these directions.

If you missed going to the well attended Van Quilt Show, you missed a fun time. Deanna Hasten and Sharon Callahan both took their granddaughters, Hanna Grace and Amanda.  Isn’t that great getting the young ones started? Also attnding were Katy Gulley, Dale Manning, Pat Sparks and myself, as well as our visitors from Winnsboro: Jean Thurman and Valerie Brunson (and maybe some others I don’t know about.) We got a lot of new ideas and also enjoyed learning at their demonstrations.  They really do well with their bazaar and they also had a silent auction that seemed to do well.  Both are ideas we could consider for our own show.

November will be a big meeting, with the reception/dedication of our Library wall hanging…recognizing our award winning quilts and quilters…displaying our 2003 Donation quilt….our program and voting. A big thanks to theArt & Design Committee for all their work, to Zella White of Sew Many Quilts for her donation of all of the fabric and to Linda Johnson for her donation of her time and quilting expertise.  Looking forward to seeing you all at the beautiful new Sulphur Springs Library. Billie Ruth Standbridge …President

From Vice President:

The November meeting will be at the Library with Bobby McDonald giving a report on the book titled “Hiddedn in Plain View.” It is a book about the slaves and how they tried to leave the south and go north and the time to go was displayed by using their quilts.  How some of the patterns gave them the signal to leave and which way to go.  Hope you you will be there. It will be a full night of entertainment. Since our Decemeber meeting will be on the 9th and it will be our Christmas social, we would like for you top bring a covered dish, salad, or desert (meat dish will be furnished) for pot luck. Also, since it will be installation of officers, I have asked Elise Brewer to speak.  Then we will have our exchange of gifts. Please bring something you have made or is homemade to exchange or bring a ready made gift valued at $5.00 to exchange.  Please do not feel pressured to make something, we just want to have fun at a very important time of the year.  Some of the members have volunteered to decorate tabbles for our Christmas social.  Don’t forget you may have to come earlier than normal to decorate in time.

Those that signed up for the retreat in January, don’t forget to make your deposit. I have contacted Letha Kobs, and she will be there to do her “Birds in the Air” as many have requested.  She will be glad to come for a workshop on a Saturday later for those unable to go on retreat.  There is a lot going on for the end of the year, so I hope you will be able to 5take part in it all.  Cecilia Anderson, Vice-President

Recording Secretary:

The complete minutes will be available for review at the November meeting. Louise Stripling,

Community Service:

Hopkins County Memorial Hospital has expressed a need for toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, small bottles of shampoo, deodorant).  Frequently patients are admitted unexpectedly and they and their families are unprepared.  Medicare, Medicaid and other insurances do not pay for personal care items.  The hospital would like to be able to provide these items to those in need. If you are interested in this need, please bring items to the November and December meeting.  Thank you in advance. Shirley Burney

Friendship/Librarian…. Colleen Hines

Bettie Hammock, a member of the Design Committee member, has graciously offered to present the quilt.  The new challenge quilt will be displayed for the 1st time.
