Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild
Sulphur Springs, Tx. May
Meeting May 24,2004
A Note From Our President
…Dear Fellow Quilters:
I hope and trust that you had a wonderful Mother's Day. Mine was wonderful--spent with family and
then I got to pick up my new cabinets for my sewing room and got them
installed. I'm ready to sew and quilt
now!!! Saturday was a great day
also. Thanks to everyone who
helped--your time is valuable and when you share it with the guild, it is
greatly appreciated. Our quilts made a
fantastic display as a backdrop for the antique cars. I'll bet Deana will have a few pictures to
show off. Bettie sewed at the window on
her featherweight and made for a unique showing. Everyone enjoyed her quilts as well as all
the others. Sharon and "Mom
"Lois were the greatest success of all selling $260 worth of tickets!!! (Sharon--I'll
hang quilts any day to let you sell like that!!) Thanks again to everyone who came Saturday
to work. 'A great big THANK YOU goes out
to Danna and Deana for making our directories such fantastic works of
art!! They've done an outstanding job
and it's a shame we don't have a competition for them---cause
we'd win every time!!! Thanks
girls!!" The quilt show
committee is working very hard to refine the entry form as well as a multitude
of other things that need to be done well in advance of the event. Sometimes it's as simple as making a phone
call or writing a letter. If you can
help, let one of them know. The more
that share in this project, the more people having fun and the less stress it
is on just a few people. This
coming Saturday will be the first workshop Bettie Hammock will be teaching for
the guild. I know those of you who are
enrolled will have a great time and will have lots to show at our next
meeting. Some of us will be leaving that
day for a trip to Ohio and Kentucky
to see lots of quilt shops and antiques and quilt shops and Amish country and
quilt shops, etc. You get the
idea!! I'm sure we'll have lots to
share with you, also. Are you
working on something for the quilt show or maybe an item for the boutique or
the auction? I know several who have
group efforts going. For now, the
quilt display at West Side Plaza
is on hold until such a time as there is a permanent owner/operator. We feel that everyone wouldn't feel secure
about loaning their quilts without knowing who is in the building. Looking forward to seeing you on the
24th!!
Jan
P.S. Please remember Sharon Callahan as her
husband became quite ill on Monday, the 10th and had to be taken to
Baylor. Our prayers need to include them
at this anxious time. Jan

Business meeting adjourned and we started the program given by the ladies from
Country Junction on the "May West Vest. Respectfully
submitted by Jo Gossett, Recording Secretary. Librarian…Billie Ruth Standbridge
Library doors will be open for business.
Books will be out and 2 new Fons & Porter
magazines will be available with some super patterns. TIPS from S&P: 1) When I am ready to hand sew the
binding to the back of quilt, I use children's metal hairclip to hold my
binding in place while I sew 2) If you
run out of stabilizer, try using the tissue paper found in gift bags and boxes. It works great, tears away easily, and you
are recycling at the same time.
FYI.....When you husband buys a new riding mower, tractor, motorcycle or
boat, it's time for a new sewing machine.
Reporter/Publicist…Deanna Hasten Quilt Show flyers are being distributed this
month to the T.A.Q.G. members as Gwen and Billie Ruth will attend the May 25th
meeting and hand out packets to all the representatives to take home to their respective guilds. We
are hoping for a wide range of participation in our show. If anyone is planning
to go to a quilt show, or a quilt store, anywhere, please take some flyers with
you! Our thanks to Peggie Wilkinson for taking some to the
Dimmit Show, and to Gwen Karney for taking some to Fredericksburg.
Because of Peggie's contact with the Pass Time Quilt
Store in Gainesville (at the Dimmit
Show), they have signed up to be one of our vendors! Other vendors are Carolyn Tosh, Calico Junction in Winnsboro, and Country Junction in
Wills Point. This is great news!Design
Committee Report…Pat PillardThe Design Committee and
members of the guild met on Wed. May 5 for our Workshop meeting at the Lutheran
Church. What a great group of women
we do have in our gild. Thank you to all the ones who made a block so carefully
and turned them in on time. Another big thank you for all who were there and
helped in any way on making the day such a success! As always with group effort comes some
confusion and a lot of laughs. We will all most likely arrive at the same conclusion,
but by a different route. Problems were resolved as needed and we now have a
quilt top ready for borders and the final appliqué. As always
with this group the food was ample, to say the least, and delicious. Another thank you to all who provided the food. Pattie Sells stopped by to take some pictures
and get a little more material for her photo essay. We thank her for her
interest and know it is beneficial to our efforts. We are on schedule with the quilt and that
makes us happy.
Respectfully submitted,Pat Pillard

all the new members for jumping in there and taking an active part to make an
overall success! You are greatly appreciated, thank you-thank you-thank you!

Window Display in West Side
Plaza Deanna Hasten
As most of you know,
the West Side Plaza
restaurant has closed and the April quilt display has been removed. This is
unfortunate both for Bill and Jo Watts (the owners) and the Guild. There have
been so many compliments on the many quilts shown this past year, and all your
workmanship has been an inspiration. Thank You to everyone who participated in
this project! In the future we may be able to have a window display again, but
for right now we will just have to "wait and see". If anyone has an
idea for a location, please let us know.
Quilt Committee
Billie Ruth Standbridge, Gwen Karney,Peggy Wilkinson, Lequida Jennings, Sherry Shockley Interesting things are happening. Last month I went to the TAQG meeting with
Gwen to attend the session on "How to put on a quilt show". Out of that presentation, I made contact with
Brenda Jeschke who has chaired the Tyler
quilt show for the past three years and Tyler
has been putting on a show for the last 23 yrs.
I asked her if she would be willing to meet with our committee and share
her expertise. Greenville
wants to start a show and Pebbles and Allen Day from the Greenville
guild asked the same thing. So, upon
returning from Paducah, four of our
committee and Pebbles and Allen, met and had a very informative day of training
with Brenda. We got many ideas and they
were very complimentary of the things we have accomplished. Their main
recommendation, after learning that we had received a $2000 grant for advertising
beyond a 70 mile range, was to extend to other quilters the opportunity enter
our show. With our committee
absorbing all these ideas, we proposed the following to our Board: 1) A judged show with the following
categories: Traditional, artistic,
family keepsake, wall hangings and exhibit only ( which
means not judged) 2) Ribbons, and an award in each category. 3)
Number of quilts to hang remain the
same.....112. 4) Wall hangings will be wall hangings only, no
baby quilts. If your throw is as large
as a wall quilt, it would go in the quilt entries.
