A Note From Our President…

Dear Fellow Quilters:

I admit I was slightly uneasy with the change in location for our past meeting, but was I ever wrong! The attendance was great and we had visitors to boot. Mary Massey is an excellent teacher and even through the subject matter was a little difficult, I thought she did a great job, and of course, her trunk show was fabulous!!!

I’m so glad of your choices for the organizations we are going to support with funds we raised last year. The two $500.00 awards are going to the new Alzheimer Caregivers group and also to Hopkins County Hospice.

Our year has started off great and we want to keep the momentum going. We have committees in place doing the background work for upcoming events. That doesn’t mean we can’t use your help. Please feel free to ask where you are needed.

Our first major project is the garage/bake sale, April 17th. Please be gathering your items and be sure you have them priced in advance, as there won’t be time the day of the sale to do so.

The Dallas Quilt Show will be the weekend before our meeting and Tyler Show the weekend following it. Be sure to try to work those into your schedule.

I’m looking forward to seeing each of you at our next meeting. Until then…

Jan

Vice President of Programs…Carolyn Tosh

Jo Parrot will present our program for the March meeting. She will do a demonstration on the Cathedral Window Quilt. Don’t miss it!!

Once more our thanks to Zella White for so graciously allowing us to use her shop SEW MANY QUILTS for our February program.

 Membership Secretary…Sharon Callahan

Hello Everyone, Don sends his thanks for the card and the
many phone calls of concern and support.  Don is doing
much better, but still has quite a bit of pain and about 5
more weeks of recovery.

I was very excited to find out that three more wonderful
ladies have joined our quilting family.  I'm sorry that I
was not their to welcome you myself, but I know all of our
members made you feel right at home.  I would like to Welcome
Dianna McGregor, Diana Harder, and
Jeannie Perry.

Just a little reminder about the Garage/Bake sale on April
17th.  We will begin setting up at
6:30 A.M.  This is such a
fun day, as well as one of our most important fundraisers,
in that it helps support the cost of putting on the Quilt
Show in September.  We really need everyone’s support.  If you
have items, but cannot work at the Garage/Bake sale, please
price them and drop them off at my house or Elaine Spragues.
I will have a sign up sheet at the March Meeting, Please help

Texas Association of Quilt Guilds report:

Remember RALLY DAY! – Saturday, July 31 – FREE! – Mary Ellen Hopkins – Bernina 125 give away – door prizes – goody bags – miniature quilt silent auction – show & tell – lunch boxes – tea, crumpets, and discounts at quilt shops – FUN, FUN, FUN!

The Bernina chances are $1 each and the lunch boxes are $6.  Small wall hangings for the silent auction are also requested from each guild, and if you can help, it would be great!

As promised last month, I will have my last year’s “goody bag” on display at our March Guild meeting.  We have finished the packets for this year’s bags (700 total), and one will be available for each of you at the March meeting.  I want to thank Peggie Wilkinson for making the labels and Sherry Shockley for helping to stuff the packets.

The secondary program for the March 30 meeting of TAQG is for the benefit of quilt show chairmen and is entitled “So, You’re Having a Quilt Show.”  Billie Ruth and Deanna will be attending with me, and I think they can tell the other guilds a thing or two or three or four – don’t you?

We have our first subscription to Fon's & Porter's Love of Quilting and will be available for checkout.  Also you may want to look over all the patterns for checkout that Bettie Hammock donated.  In order to increase our number of patterns for checkout, we might consider all the many patterns that we have at home that we have used or maybe haven't even gotten to yet and make them available strictly only a personal basis.  They would still be yours.  Instead of their having a Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild label, stick on one of your return address labels.  Sherry Shockley just paid $9.00 for an English Paper Piecing pattern, only to get it home and find that there were no instructions.  She emailed the internet address and the response was, " I assume the buyer knows how to paper piece."   Patterns are expensive and I think this would be great way to help each other.

Reporter/Publicist…Deanna Hasten

We hope that all of you have read the wonderful article in the NEWS-TELEGRAM, published February 19, showing Sharon’s wall hanging donation and featuring our Guild. Thanks to reporter Patti Sells, Who also visited our January Guild meeting. She is working with Pat Pillard and the Design Committee in order to complete a Photo Essay on making a quilt………..Be listening to KSST for occasional mention of our Guild. Enola Gay is one of our quilting friends, and helps us advertise……Quilt Show Update:  We have a request from California for a booth!  And, we have already received  TWO door prizes, one from Hobbs Battings and one from Quilt Country quilt store in Lewisville. The show is just 6 months away!!

Design Committee Report…Pat Pillard

We think we are moving along nicely. The top is cut out. Several of you expressed that you especially like to take the blocks home and do them. So…. We will have them packaged and ready for you to do that. We will pass them out at the March meeting and if you can please have them ready to return at the April meeting we will have a guild workshop in early May and put the quilt together. Some of the appliqué cannot be placed until after the borders are completed. We are hopeful we will have this at the machine quilter by the first of June. We know many of us have grandchildren in the summer and it seems we are all very busy. This is good we have been told, and it certainly beats the alternative!

See you at the meeting.

Pat, Cecilia, Pat, Joy, Pat and Ann

Respectfully submitted,

Pat Pillard

Design Chairperson

Hostess Chairman…Patsy Crist

A special thank you to our February hostess: Linda Bailey, Billy Ruth, Danna and Hanna Darty. Even though it was raining cats & dogs, they so generously supplied refreshments and goodies to go with our sack lunches at Zella’s place.

HOSTESSES FOR MARCH 22,2004 will be: Ann Billington, Flo Cain, Katy Gulley and group coordinator Joe Gossett.

We also discussed the BAKE SALE FOR APRIL 17TH. Many ladies were not at the February meeting a Zella’s. I passed a bake sale donation list around, on which we do have commitments, but we had only a few commitments for cakes and pies. HELP!!! The march 22 meeting will be our last general meeting before the garage/bake sale. So, please make your baking commitments by or before the March meeting. I will pass the list around again at the next meeting.  Needed baked goods are: cookies, brownies, muffins/cupcakes, pies, candy, breads, rolls, etc. Please make our bake sale a success!!!!

Thank you for all your help----it is appreciated.

COOKBOOK---Jeannie Perry, my daughter & I are doing a cookbook of recipes submitted by our club members. We will use recipes submitted in the newsletters from last year and this year. However, don’t wait to submit your recipes and be left out. We will take recipes through the end of May. The books will be sold at the quilt show in our boutique for $5.00 each. All proceeds will go to the club.

Quilters’ Bulletin Board

Quilts for Fall Festival.....Billie Ruth

I will have a sign-up sheet for whatever quilts or wall hangings that you have, or anticipate having,  ready for the Fall Festival Quilt Show.  That can include any family quits that you have not yet shown, or at least not for the past two years.  I'm asking this early because Deanna will start the advertising over the radio just any time and we're emphasising early sign-up due to our 112-quilt limitation.   That limitation does not include wall hangings, throws, etc. that can be hung at the end of the pipes beyond the quilts.

A Reminder:  Need a new supply of stamped, self-addressed envelopes for the new year or current email address!

I have these on my mail list but no envelopes—Please let me know if this is correct or if you should be email. Thanks in advance.

Valerie Brunson, Vada Gooding, Shirley Hogan, Sharlyn Parent Mary Jo Williams, Melba Crain

Please give these to Peggie Wilkinson.

Window Display in West Side Plaza

This month’s display features Jan Bartley, our 2004 President, and her family’s quilts……there are FIVE generations represented!! One is dated from the 1800’s, several from the 1930’s,a Postage Stamp, four DUTCH DOLL quilts daughter Cara’s quilts, and on through quilts Jan made for her grandchildren. You will enjoy reading the cards on each quilt. The middle window helps us celebrate the Guild’s 6th birthday by showing the very first donation quilt dated 1998. Lucky for us, it was won by Guild member Cecilia Anderson………thanks for letting us borrow it for a month! Guild scrapbooks, directories, and the photo frame showing all our presidents are included. We hope you will take the time to enjoy all the display, and perhaps have a delicious lunch at the restaurant. Bill and Jo Watts are the owners, and we are grateful for the use of their windows for our benefit.
