March 17, 2003

From the President:

Hello Ladies,

What a meeting we had!!   Even though we didn’t have a program since Sandy Brawner couldn't get in from north of Dallas, we did have 19 ladies who braved the weather and we had a short but fun meeting.   Jo Gossett called me in the afternoon and asked, "Am I making all these sandwiches for nothing?"  Well, we have never had a meeting called for weather, so I said, "We'd be there".  In addition to eating a lot of good food, we did install Zella White as a Life Time Member, honor our birthday ladies and enjoy everybody's Show & Tell.

In order to bring an interesting newsletter we're trying to be really careful about not being redundant in our information, but this is worth repeating, even though it will be reported in the minutes.  We are taking advertisements in our Directory and Sharon Callahan really must have done some arm twisting (I'm kidding) but she announced that her son-in-law and his brother, owners of Wilcox Plumbing, bought $300 worth of advertising.  Also, new member, Carolyn Tosh took out advertising for her quilt/retreat business.  What a help this is!  Our Directory is more than paid for.  Let's support our advertisers.

I have a bit of an unusual request to make.  Remember the doors that Bobby McDonald provided for decorating the entry of the Fall Festival Quilt Show last year?  They were great and so interesting, but they had displays that were for promoting interest in his books and there wasn't any thing on them that identified our Guild.  SO.......we would like to get our own old doors and decorate them to promote our group this year.  Sharon and I recently passed a demolished house and the owner gave us 3 doors.  Course, we couldn't carry them away so our Honorary Member, Carroll Hasten, came to our rescue with his handy truck.  So.......my request is, stay on the lookout for old doors.  We'll need about 12.  Bet you never knew that old doors had anything to do with quilting.

A little reminder about my challenge that I issued in January:  a completed quilt from every member by the Fall Quilt Show.  Also, since we want to auction off some quilts, plus wall hangings, we will be calling on you for your help in some group projects.

On a sadder note, our sympathy goes out to the Palmer family.  Some of you may not have been aware of Audrey's stroke and subsequent death.  Her last few days were spent in Hospice in Tyler.  Her smile and ready participation will be greatly missed by her circle friends and our Guild family.

Take care and I'll see you at Guild.

 President, Billie Ruth Standbridge

Vice President….Jan Bartley

Well…once again we are reminded of the One whose Hand controls everything…including the weather!

Of course, we were disappointed that Sandy Brawner of Quilt Country Quilt Shop in Lewisville wasn’t able to be

with us in February, but I’ll try to book her for a later date. (Note:  If you get the Keepsake Quilting catalog, one of

Sandy’s designs is on the cover of the latest issue!)

This month’s program will be on rag quilts and rotary cutting tips and will be presented by Camille Wideman of

Sumner (north of Paris).  Camille works and teaches classes for the quilt shop in Paris.  I attended a retreat with her

and really enjoyed getting to know her and realizing what unique talent she has!

If you still have a crazy quilt block for Billie Ruth, let’s try and get those finished by this month’s meeting.  She’ll soon

have a wedding date for her daughter and we won’t have a finished quilt!

Special Events….Deanna Hasten

Please be thinking GARAGE SALE this next month…the date for our Garage Sale/Bake Sale is April 26 behind the Stewart Insurance Building on Gilmer Street.  Our goal is to be even more successful than last year!  At the March meeting, there will be work schedules to fill out, so please be thinking about the time you would like to be there…the hours are 6:30 AM until about 3:00 PM, so there are lots of choices.

QUILT SHOW UPDATE:  Eleven letters have been sent out to list us in various publications, including Quilter’s Newsletter and Texas Highways.  Twenty-eight letters requesting door prizes have been sent…in fact, a $20 gift certificate has already been received from Martingale Publishing not to mention books, quilt batting, etc. from various other companies!  Two letters for TV coverage (!) have been sent:  High Noon Productions (HG/TV), and to Bob Phillips of Texas Country Reporter.  As previously reported, Dr. Don Locke is bringing his “The Supper” quilt (15.3’ x 5.5’, 350 fabrics, and 51,816 half-inch squares) to our show, so we are really expecting great things!  Every guild member still has time to finish an item to enter…thanks to ALL of YOU for your continuing support of all the guild’s activities.

For those that receive the newsletter by email, I will have a copy of the Budget Report for January 1/02 through December 31/02 at the March meeting.

Membership Secretary….Sharon Callahan

Hi Everyone, I have great news, I found a source for our Membership Guild Pins, and we will have them by the May 26th meeting.  They will be our Guild Logo, naturally and the cost to each member will only be $6.00  I would like to start taking advance orders to help pay for the initial cost of the pins.  Don't forget to sign up for the signature friendship swap.  Once we know how many people will be participating, then we can begin.  Remember, you need to cut your unbleached Muslin signature blocks 3 1/2 X 6 1/2 and if possible keep your signature centered and

confined to 3 inches.  Well, I now have my membership goal number, which is 49.  We currently have 54 Members, 5 of which are new members, so we only need 44 more new members to double our Membership, which is my goal.  I really need your help to make this a reality.  If  each person brings just one new member, we will surpass

our goal.  Don't forget those Boutique and Auction items…we really need everyone’s support for these to be a success.

Librarian….Ethel Winton

I want to thank Danna Darty for printing all the Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild labels for our library books.  With the help of several ladies we got labels on all of our books and magazines and now everything is ready for check out.  Last month's meeting had to end early, with sleet and snow closing in, so we didn't get to see Deanna's wallhanging which demonstrates the use of the snippet technique.  I will have the Snippet Sensations book on display for any who are interested.  I understand you really can't make a mistake.  Some of you may remember Deborah Mouser gave a program on this technique a couple of years ago and showed us some very impressive results.  Again, may I remind you, take a look at the many helpful, interesting books we have.  The library cabinet will be open when you arrive.

Design Committee….Pat Powell

Thanks to everyone who braved the bad weather at the February meeting and brought their red and/or blue fat quarters.  To those of you who were unable to bring theirs last month, please try to bring them for the March meeting.  We must get started on this quilt, we do have many things to do and places to go.  We will make an announcement as to a workday as soon as we can.

Thank You,

Pat Powell

Hostess Chairman…Lequida Jennings

Thank you February hostesses Jo Gossett (who traded with Shirley Burney), Sharon Callahan and granddaughter, Amanda Wilcox, Danna Darty and daughter, Hanna, and Lorraine Deaner for the wonderful Valentine surprises.  Everything was so tasty and beautiful.

The March hostesses are Patsy Crist, Brenda Dial, Katherine Emerson and Shirley Burney.

Remember, it is your responsibility, if you are unable to serve at the designated month, to trade with someone else in another month.

I hope you are all enjoying the recipes from our members.  Thanks for sharing them with the Guild.  We look forward to receiving them each month.

Thank you again,

Lequida Jennings

From Valerie Brunson:  Black Bean Soup

Follow the recipe on the back of the can. To make a  large pot it will take at least 4 recipes. I added Rotel tomatoes, took out the carrots, added more onion. You can also add cilantro and basically anything else you want. Instead of the diced tomatoes, I added the flavored diced tomatoes with garlic and onion. Then of course, salt, pepper, and garlic.

From Pat Pillard: Classic French Bread

1 cup plus 2 tbl. water

2 tsp. butter, softened

3¼ c. bread flour

1 tbl. Sugar

1 tsp. Salt

2¾ tsp bread machine or quick acting dry yeast

Place in machine in the order your make requires. Select dough cycle. When finished, let rest on counter for 5-10 minutes. Shape in manner desired. Place on greased sheet. Cut slits in top, cover, place in warm spot and allow to rise for about 30-40 minutes until double in size. Bake in 375 oven for about 20 minutes.  Brush top with butter and allow to cool at least 15 minutes before cutting.

Chile-Cheese Chicken Soup

4 slices bacon

1 medium onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 jalapenos, minced

1 tsp. Dried oregano

½ tsp. Cumin

2/3 cup uncooked rice

½ dry white wine

1- 15oz. can Mexican style stewed tomatoes

6 cups chicken broth

3 chicken breast halves, cut in pieces [1 lb.]

salt and pepper to taste

4oz. Shredded Monterey Jack cheese shredded

2 TBL fresh cilantro, chopped

Cook bacon until crisp, drain on paper, crumble and set aside.  Add the onion, garlic and peppers, stirring until softened. 3-5 minutes.  Add the oregano, cumin and rice. Cook, stirring for 1 minute, add the wine, tomatoes and broth. Reduce heat to medium low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the chicken and simmer for about 10 minutes, or until white and cooked throughout. Season to taste, sprinkle with cheese, bacon and cilantro.

From Cecilia Anderson:  Seven Can Soup

Brown 1 lb hamburger meat with one sliced onion

Drain and add:

3 cans Minestrone Soup

1 can Rotel Tomatoes

2 cans Ranch Style Beans

1 Large can tomatoes

This is very thick and I have thinned it with water and cooked longer. (It is also good with one can of chopped green chilies)

Community Service….Shirley Burney

Because of the bad weather last month, we postponed voting for our 2003 community projects until the March meeting.  It has been mentioned to add Hospice to our list for consideration in honor of our member, Audrey Palmer, who recently passed away.  We did, however, donate clothes and personal items to Family Haven this month.

Newsletter Editor….Danna Darty

Just a reminder to send 9 SASE envelopes to me if you haven’t already done so for the newsletter.  Or, should you opt to receive it through email, please make sure I have your correct address.  Thanks to all those ladies out there in “cyberspace” who patiently endured with me while I tackled those computer- glitches this past month.  I think we’ve corrected the problem!!

Recording Secretary…Louise Stripling

Minutes

Regular Meeting –February 28, 2003

Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild

Guild President Billie Ruth Standbridge called the meeting to order.  Hostesses were Sharon Callahan, Lorriane Deaner,

Danna and Hanna Darty, Jo Gossett, and Amanda Wilcox.

Due to the extreme weather predictions, there were only 19 members present and 1 visitor, Patsy Crist.  Since there was

not a majority present, no voting could take place.  Items on the agenda will be carried over to the March meeting.

Membership Secretary Sharon Callahan named the birthday honorees for February; Jan Bartley, Carolyn Tosh, and

Amanda Wilcox.  Sharon gave each one a fat-quarter from the Birthday Basket.  Happy Birthday!

Zella White, owner of SEW MANY QUILTS quilt store was present to accept a Lifetime Membership in the Lone Star

Heritage Quilt Guild.  Sharon Callahan made the presentation by reading the certificate and congratulating Zella.

Sharon also mentioned the Friendship blocks that are planned for this year.  The idea originated with Rose

Hillsamer and everyone is encouraged to participate.  Plain blocks of unbleached muslin measuring 3-1/2 x 6-1/2”

with the member’s name either embroidered or written with a permanent pen will be exchanged.

Vice President Jan Bartley announced that the scheduled speaker, Sandy Brawner from Lewisville, had to cancel due to

the very inclement weather.  Hopefully, she can be rescheduled.  Jan read a humorous article by Lee Pitts about trying

to keep up with the progress of today’s world.  Jan said next month’s program will be Camille Wideman on rotary

cutting and also rag quilts.

Carolyn Tosh mentioned a retreat at Shoestring Farm for March 21-23 and said that there are still 2 openings.  Quilt

Teacher Letha Kobs will be there.

Deanna Hasten talked about the Membership Directory and was excited to show the $300 check given by Wilcox

Plumbing (Sharon’s son-in-law and Amanda’s dad) to purchase advertising in the directory.  The rates are ¼ page for

$25, etc., if anyone knows a potential advertiser.

Sharon showed the Texas wall hanging she is making for the Quilt Show auction in September.  Billie Ruth has made

a similar one and donated it for Frank Smith, Director of Tourism for Hopkins County.  Frank used it for an auction

held to benefit his tourism association.

Show and Tell:  Elaine Sprague showed a rose wall hanging and a cat wall hanging she made for the boutique

and auction.  Our thanks!  Bettie Hammock showed her wonderful quilts.  Carolyn showed two quilts, also, all with

lots of appreciation from the members.

Ethel Winton displayed the finished quilt for Vada Gooding that was completed in a recent quilting bee.  Thanks to

everyone who helped!

With phone calls coming in to the Senior Center about the rain and sleet, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted in the absence of Recording Secretary, Louise Stripling,

Deanna Hasten

Friend and Guild member, Audrey Palmer, died this month after suffering from an aneurysm and stroke.

One of our quilters cannot attend our meetings due to being severely allergic to perfume and is undergoing treatments

to try to alleviate this problem.  Could we fellow Guild members wear only a minimum of perfume or refrain from wearing

any at all to the meetings?

Quilting Bee Report:

Thanks to all the quilters who made it possible for Vada’s quilt to be so beautifully finished and in time for

her daughter’s birthday.  Sharon Callahan, Brenda Dial (during her lunch hour), Jo Gossett, Deanna Hasten,

Colleen Hines, Joy Rutledge, Cora Smithers, Pat Sparks, Billie Ruth Standbridge, Louise Stripling and Ethel

Winton were so generous in donating their time for this project.  Appreciation, too, to Louise Hill for cross-stitching

The unfinished block and to Bettie Hammock for binding the quilt.  Vada was able to visit the quilting bee and to also
