June Meeting   June 28,2004

A Note From Our President…

Dear Fellow Quilters:

I do believe summer’s upon us!! I hope each of you will have time to get to a little quilting or at least visit a quilt shop or two wile you vacation.

While on our bus tour up into Ohio and Kentucky last month, we came across the perfect men’s suiting to border and back the tie quilt that Pat Spark’s neighbor gave the guild. It will make a fantastic quilt for our auction and Pat and Gwen are hard at work on another.

What are you making for our Quilt show? Here are some ideas---quilts for display/competition, quilts for the auction, boutique items, ect.

Our next event to participate in (and this is a one time deal) is the hanging of quilts for the Sesquicentennial Committee. It will be on Saturday, July 3rd from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. This is an easy one—just bring a quilt or two and sit on someone’s front porch and visit or watch the viewers go by. How hard is that!!

The “Old Glory” workshop by Rita Runquist is scheduled for Saturday, August 14th from 9-4 at the Senior Citizens Center. Cost is $30.00 with lunch provided. The workshop is open first to those who went on the bus tour last month and then to all guild members. The first 25 who pay their registration fee will be the lucky ones.

Have you ever looked for a new idea for a border to add some pizzazz to a quilt you’re working on? If you will bring 4 pieces of paper in a background color-cut 3”x3” and then 4 pieces in a color or print-cut 3”x3”—I’ll show you a quick and easy idea I picked up at the first quilt shop we visited on our trip. You could add it in a lot of places in varying sizes.

See you on the 29th. Have a great month!!

TAQG Rally Day

Saturday, July 31, Tyler, Harvey Convention Center

Please let me know if you plan to attend.  The convention center needs to know an approximate attendance by June 30.

I still have a few raffle tickets for the Bernina 125 sewing machine.  I will have them at our June guild meeting.

Lunch tickets will be sold at our guild meeting.  They are $6.

Remember there will be door prizes, and Mary Ellen Hopkins is bringing a number of items with her.  She will autograph books – even those purchased previously if you bring them.

Bring money – there will be stuff to buy from Mary Ellen as well as TAQG – tee shirts, pins, books, etc.   And, of course, you will want to bid on the miniature quilts in the silent auction, especially those from our guild.   Jan Bartley made a really cute pinwheel miniature and Pat Sparks made a beautiful patriotic schoolhouse miniature.  My very grateful thanks go to these ladies for their support.  You really need to attend just to see the beautiful work these ladies do.

There will be a “show and tell”.  If you are interested in bringing something, please let me know.

Two quilt shops will be open to 7 p.m. – Sharman’s and A Nimble Thimble.  On Saturday afternoon A Nimble Thimble will be hosting refreshments.

And, of course, goody bags and lots of fun – and FREE.

Thank you,

Gwen Karney

LibrarianBillie Ruth Standbridge

Library doors will be open for business.  Books will be out and 2 new Fons & Porter magazines will be available with some super patterns.  TIPS from S&P:  1) When I am ready to hand sew the binding to the back of quilt, I use children's metal hairclip to hold my binding in place while I sew 2) If you run out of stabilizer, try using the tissue paper found in gift bags and boxes.  It works great, tears away easily, and you are recycling at the same time.  FYI.....When you husband buys a new riding mower, tractor, motorcycle or boat, it's time for a new sewing machine.

Reporter/Publicist…Deanna Hasten

It is time for the official 2004 Quilt Show Committee to be named!! If you would like to be on the committee, please tell Jan, Billie Ruth, or Deanna. A lot of pre-show work has already been done, but there is a lot more planning and decision making ahead. Notify one of us at the June Guild meeting.

   For your information:

There will be two men with Scissor-Sharpening equipment at our Fall Festival Quilt Show. Tell your friends also, and remember to have all your scissors sharpened while you can. It is reasonable and they do a great job.

Sesquicentennial Quilt Walk - Billie Ruth Standbridge

Considering that everybody does not live in Sulphur Springs or take the Sulphur Springs paper, I figured I should offer a more complete explanation of Sesquicentennial Quilt Walk on July 3rd for the benefit of those who sere not sure about the event and for those who were not in attendance. You might have watched a similar event reviewed on Alex Anderson’s show done in Redlands, California. Quilts are shown on the porches of beautiful old homes, on a frame or draped over porch chairs, railings, or swings. Viewers can stroll the 2 block distance, walking up to each porch to view the quilts.

Deanna has brought large red stars to be attached to a wire floral tripod and placed out at the sidewalk so that every homeowner who is participating is identified during the week prior to the Walk. People may drive by or stop and come up to the porch to admire the quilts. At that time our Quilters can give out information on our guild and our upcoming Fall Festival Show and also to let people know that the quilts on the Quilt Walk will not be hanging in the Fall Festival.

There are 17 homes available and the proposed time for us to be there will be between 10 am and 2pm There were not enough signups at the Guild meeting for 2 people per home and I’m assuming most of you would rather be with a partner. If you did sign up, would you please call somebody to be your partner and let me know?

The Quilt Walk and the beautiful wall hanging that Jan has shown you, is all part of what the Sesquicentennial Committee asked of us. We’re hopeful of having the wall hanging becoming a part of the history of the town as the result of the auction to be held.

When you get your newsletter, if you can help us that day, please email me at: [email protected]. I will need to have my list finalized before the June meeting. If, by the time you receive your newsletter, you can help, would you please call me ASAP.

Ladies, please make the best photo you can of your quilt entry because that picture is going to be the 1st thing judges see of your quilts. If you feel this is a problem for you, bring your quilts(s) early to the guild meeting and Deanna or Dana will take a picture for you. This way we will have someone to help hold the quilt up or we can use one of our frames.

If you don’t want to have to add the additional information needed to the old ENTRY FORM, just go to our website www.goecities.com/lshqg and print off as many of the new entries as you need. If you want to stay with the old form, turn page 2 over and write in the (1) dimensions (2) check quilt or wall hanging (3) check proper category. Make sure that if you do not want your quilt judged, that you check exhibit.

Wall hangings can be Traditional or Artistic. All you have to do is check Wall Hangings. Any other question email me; [email protected] or ask me at the Guild meeting.

FALL FESTIVAL SHOW 2005

Put on your thinking caps ladies, I know it may be strange to start bringing up the Fall Festival Show for 2005, but if we intend to continue with the idea of a “Feature” quilts, then we need to think of what we want now. Major, important items are sometimes booked 1,2or even 3 years in advance. Do you know of something that you think would be a major drawing card to our show? I already have people asking me what the special quilt will be this year, because they were so impressed with last year’s “The Supper Quilt”.

It was at Rose Hillsamer suggestion last fall that caused us to pursue the “American Spirit Collection”, a collection of wall-hangings and quilts that were made up to commemorate 911. It’s a very emotional display that has traveled the country every since they were made up. We were barely able to get it committed to us back in October. So you can see how important it is that if we are to have something with strong public appeal, we really have to start early.
