Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild Sulphur Springs, Tx.

LOCATION CHANGE FOR February 23…. Meeting at Sew Many Quilts!! (New location V F strip mall) everyone is invited Social will begin at 5:30 p.m.-bring a sack lunch-drinks and dessert provided.

A Note From Our President… Dear Fellow Quilters: What an awesome beginning to our new year!! I thought Trish Stuart's program was fantastic and by some of your comments, you agree with me. She is sending me information about workshops she does. I was also very excited with the attendance for our first meeting of the year and hope we keep it at such a high number. Be sure you notice information enclosed in other articles in this newsletter about the change in location and refreshments for February's meeting. Thanks to all of you who generously volunteered to serve on various committees. The only area we need help in right now is to have a couple of volunteers to co-chair our day at Heritage Park in May. It's a one-day event (May 8th) and either Deanna or Billie Ruth has documented everything you would need to do. Give them or me a call to see what is involved in making that day happen. You might be surprised to find out a lot of the work has already been done for you! Bettie Hammock, Pat Sparks and I are working on the logo quilt for the Sesquicentennial Celebration. After meeting with two of their committee members at our board meeting, we feel much better about what we are doing for them. I will share more at our meeting about all of the things they are doing. JUST A FEW REMINDERS: Check out the latest quilt display at West Side Plaza; remember we will be voting on who will receive the monies we raised for charity last year at our next meeting; bring a friend and a show and tell item. I want this year to be a great one for every member of our guild. While I realize you can't please "all the people--all the time", I hope you will let me know if there are areas of concern to you. As I tell my customers--I can't correct anything if I don't know about it. Remember--this is your guild. Help make it what you would like it to be!! I hope you get to spend some cold February days doing what we all love--QUILTING!! See you on the 23rd. Jan

Vice President of Programs…Carolyn Tosh

Major change to remember: We meet at SEW MANY QUILTS DO NOT GO TO THE senior Citizens Center We have a very different approach to our program this month. Many of you know Mary Massey and how skilled and talented she is in her selection of materials for her fabulous quilts. Well, she is going to pass that magic on to us. (Don’t we wish!)? With Zella’’s full array of quilt fabrics to choose from, Mary will have everything at hand to show us how she goes about putting fabrics together. This will be fun and informative. Don’t miss it. Zella will be on hand to assist anyone needing fabric. .

Membership Secretary…Sharon Callahan

I would like to say thank you to each of you for getting your dues to me so that I could complete my Membership List for the Directory. I also would like to thank those members who helped me obtain the ads for the Directory. Those ads will pay for the publishing of our Directory and for the colored picture of our logo on the front. We obtained a total of $400.00 in ads. GREAT JOB! Well, everyone knows that I think MORE is BETTER. I really get excited when we recruit new members. January was fantastic, we signed up 7 new members, and I just want to say Welcome, Welcome, Welcome. I would like to introduce them to you now: Melba Crain, Johnnie Elgin(former member), Lynne Merrick, Lois Shannon and Sherry Shockley. I know I welcomed Cristina and Hannah Perry last month, but I wanted to mention them again, (junior members), because we need them to carry on the art of quilting and maybe one day teach others. Colleen Hines approached me about a swap of 6" fabric squares, containing zoo and barnyard animals, to be make into I spy Quilts. Please think about whether you would like to participate and we will discuss it at the February Meeting. If there are enough members interested will work out the details and have a sign up sheet at the March meeting. Just a little reminder about the Garage/Bake Sale. Many of our members who have always participated in this event, will be at the Paducah Quilt Show the weekend of April 24th, so we have rescheduled the Sale for April 17th, weather permitting. I know each of us have things we can donate to the Garage Sale but don’t forget to ask friends and relatives if they have items they would like to donate to our Guild. I’m not trying to be pushy, I’m and Eager Beaver with a $1000.00 goal. If you collect items and don’t want to keep up with them, just give them to Elaine Sprague or me. Please price your items in advance.

Jan accompanied me to attend the secondary meeting, which was for all guild presidents. She said the meeting was very informative and she made a lot of new contacts. Most of the business meeting was taken up discussing the upcoming "Rally Day" to be held in Tyler on July 31st. Remember, as members of our guild, we can attend this event free. The gust speaker will be Mary Ellen Hopkins. Tyler quilt shops will be serving tea and crumpets during the day, as well as offering discounts. I have raffle tickets for a Bernina 125 that will be given away. These tickets are $1. I also have tickets for either ham or turkey lunch Boxes. Other activities include door prizes, goodie bags, show & tell, and a miniature silent auction. But, all good things come with a little catch. Our guild is being asked to submit at least two miniature quilts for the silent auction and something to include in the goodie bags. I know I can count on all of you to help. At our guild meeting I will have a sample of what we are proposing to include in the bags, and I will have a display of what was in my goodie bag last year. I hope all of you can make plans to attend this Rally Day. It should be a lot of fun. Upcoming area quilt shows: Wise County QG, March 20, Baptist Church: East Texas QG, March 26-28, Harvey Convention Center, March 13-15 Gwen Karney

LibrarianBillie Ruth Standbridge

For those of you who took part in the Friendship name exchange, or who might plan a friendship quilt in the future, you may want some ideas about how to display the names. In The Complete Book of Quilt Making by Michele Walker, pgs 46 & 47, you will find numerous block designs showing different approaches to framing the names. The examples are in a quilt called Friendship Medley, "each block done by a different person, signed and dated over a period from 1882-1900. The makers appear to have been unusually elderly, several being between 96 and 98 years old, which may explain the uncharacteristically imperfect workmanship. Not only is the stitching uneven but there are a good many somewhat unruly squares-maybe the result of failing eyesight". You’ll recognize every block. I have to wonder how block patterns were started, named and consistently remained the same over so many years. I realize the art of quilting came from China and Egypt, but how and when did the block patterns begin? I guess I’ve got a research project ahead. I thought you might be interested in what the ladies were doing over a 100 years ago. I think this is a good reminder to us to be sure to put the date along with other information on our labels. Who knows where our quilts will be a 100 years from now. The book will be on the library display table along with others of interest. .

The last entry has been made in the 2003 Guild Scrapbook and will be stored in our metal cabinet if anyone would like to take a look back at our fantastic 2003! Now, on to 2004 …. There is already so much activity going on, and big plans being made! Quilt show flyers have been printed (special recognition goes to Billie Ruth and Rose and David Hillsamer), Guild business cards are being distributed, and other advertising to best utilize the $2,000.00 grant we have received for publicity. If YOU have any ideas or a means to advertise the Guild, please let me know. News-Telegram reporter Patti Sells visited our January meeting and is writing about our activities…..So we are really looking forward to an article in the paper!

Design Committee Report…Pat Pillard

Design Committee Report It seems everyone was pretty much in agreement on the voting for our next raffle quilt. We had 17 votes for "Day and Night". The other 11 votes were split between "Love Entangled" and "An Angel Watching Over Me" We knew the biggest hurdle would be in finding the blacks for this quilt, so we started as early as we could. We met Wed. 2/7, at Braum’s for a little conference on size, amounts, etc. and went on to Sew Many Quilts. Pattie Sells, the feature writer from the News Telegram, joined us there. She is interested in doing a photo essay on the making of a raffle quilt. By the time she arrived we were really into gathering fabric and trying to choose. We did pretty well on the darks, but we could use some more of the florals with black for the lights. (This means florals with a light to creamy background and some black.) So please dig into your stash and see if you have some you would like to share. If they won’t work we will return or put them in the guild stash. They, Sew Many Quilts, had the perfect border and we will use the colors in the pattern for the appliqué flowers. That is pink, rose and burgundy. We had planned to move on to one of the shops surrounding but the much needed rain caused a last minute change in our plans. One more time, Zella came through for our guild. She donated all the fabrics we selected. This will be a big savings for us. For all you newcomers, which we are so thankful to have, I am talking about Zella White, the owner of Sew Many Quilts, our local quilt shop. She has always been so supportive and helpful. Please remember her shop for your quilting supplies. Just as soon as we can assemble all our fabrics, wash and cut the strips and squares we will have our first workshop. We expect that to be sometime in early March and hope to have a date for you by the guild meeting. Looking forward to seeing you there! Pat, Cecilia, Pat, Joy, Pat and Ann Respectfully submitted, Pat Pillard Design Chairperson
