A Note From Our President…

Dear Quilting Friends:

Well, I hope you got those Christmas projects finished.  I gave up on the Christmas pajamas for the second year in a row.  But I did get six stockings finished for my daughter's new house.  What would they do without us??

Of all the messages that I would send to you this year, this would be the most important.  I send you the best of wishes for a safe, happy, healthy holiday season and the most blessed of new years.  Although several of our members have suffered illness and death, I hope that you have family and friends to surround you with love and support this season.  Please know that you are in all our thoughts and prayers.

I hope that you personally were able to forego our traditional gift exchange this year and contribute to a military family that we chose to help out this holiday season.  If you forgot, please go ahead and get your monies to Gwen.  It will be appreciated.  Just think of the freedoms we have all because someone's family member is fighting for us.

The board met and has worked on a budget for next year and will be meeting again tentatively scheduled for the 15th of January.  Lequida has graciously invited us to her home again to have an all day workday to get our new year off to a great start.  Please know that any guild member who is interested in the workings of the guild board is encouraged to be present for this important meeting.

Just in case you don't know, there are several committees already at work on next year's projects--so let us know if you have a desire to help out.  As I have said over and over--this is your guild and we need everyone's participation to be successful.  There are all types of jobs--large and small and we need you!!!

Once again--the very best to you this holiday.  I hope you will be able to look back and say it was one of the best ever!

Merry Christmas!

                                                                Jan

Vice President of Programs…Carolyn Tosh

Have had such great feedback from the November program. Sounds like everyone enjoyed Brenda’s expertise and knowledge of quilts and quilting.

Our December program will be the Christmas Party. Don’t forget the date is Dec.13th at the Senior Citizens Bldg. This year there will be no gift exchange, instead we will be giving a $10.00 donation toward a military family. There will also be special entertainment for our party that you will not want to miss.

We will also be installing our new officers for the coming year. We need to give them our help and encouragement for the coming year.

Hi Everyone,
Another year has come and gone, and what a great year it
has been.  The Holidays are here, and what a joyous time
they are.  I hope each and every one of you can be with
your loved ones during this time.  I would like to wish
each of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

FYI: Let us know if they have a family member in active duty in the military. We would like to acknowledge them at our Christmas dinner.

Prior to the program and business meeting, President Jan Bartley began with Show and Tell items by members and showing of serger quilts made in the workshop.

After refreshments, President Jan Bartley called the meeting of Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild to order at 6:50 PM on Monday, November 22, 2004, at the Senior Citizen Building.

Billie Ruth introduced Brenda Jeschke of Buffalo, Texas who presented a program on Tips and Techniques of Quilting and a trunk showing of her award winning quilts. Brenda has served as Chairman of Tyler Quilt show for three years. Lois Shannon gave out the Birthday Fat Quarters in absence of Sharon Callahan.

On her birthday, Savannah Pool presented $52 in birthday money and a box of stuffed toys to Family Haven.

Billie Ruth made a motion, with second from Pam Bell to accept minutes as written. Motion carried. Gwen Karney, treasurer, was absent.

She announced for the December Christmas party meat will be provided by the guild and prepared by Roberta Vanderberg, with other hostesses Ethel Winton, Pam Bell, Joan Aisles and Mary Jo Williams providing the side dishes. Selected members will decorate the tables.

Jan reminded the members that the guild had voted in lieu of gifts each member could donate $10 to be given to a military family. Billie Ruth announced the Sulphur Springs military family has been selected. The father is serving in Iraq, the mother is out of work due to a broken leg and the couple has two children, ages 9 and 11.

Are there techniques that you want more information on? We have some great resources to browse through and find your next great project. We might have just the book that will inspire your next quilt.

Reporter/Publicist…Deanna Hasten

Publicity/Historian.........Deanna Hasten              I hope all of our members have had the opportunity to read THE QUILT CORNER articles, written by Billie Ruth, that have been published in the Sulphur Springs News-Telegram the past four weeks....they are wonderful, with lots of information for Guild members as well as other readers.  The articles are fantastic publicity for our Guild!  The first article focused on the role of men in the quilting world, with a photo of Paul Penson, Lequida Jennings' dad.  The second article explored the versatility of the well-known Log Cabin block.  Our own Rose Hillsamer, with a photo of her standing in the front of her Sunbonnet Sue/Overall Bill quilt being displayed at the Houston Quilt Festival, was featured in the third article.  This past weekend edition of the paper showed an antique quilt with tips on quilt care, including the "buttermilk" treatment suggested by last month's speaker, Brenda Jeschke, from the Tyler guild.  There must be lots of "midnight oil" burning at the Standbridge home as evidenced by such excellent articles.  Thank you so much, BR, for everything you do that benefits everyone in the Guild!  I will have copies of the articles on display at the December l3th meeting.

BIRTHDAY TEA PARTY AT CHARLOTTE'S QUILTING WEB:   Deanna Hasten        Last Saturday I was invited by Cathie Pool to join her and her mother, Jeraldine Wages, at Charlotte's Quilting Web for a tea party in Cathie's honor..........what fun!!   (To be honored on your own birthday, just sign up at the quilt store.... it’s just that simple.  Charlotte announced it at one of our Guild meetings; so if you weren't there that night, just go by the store.)   To start off, we were given tea-party hats to wear while we played a quilt store "scavenger hunt" game (it wasn't as easy as it sounds!).  After working really hard to find the right answers, we were treated to a delightful tea party including hot tea, of course, chicken salad finger sandwiches, a cookie assortment, and a beautiful birthday cake just for Cathie.....all served on pretty glass dishes,  with a silver sugar bowl, and beautiful white linens.  This was the perfect time for Cathie to enjoy such a fun party since this birthday just happened to be the big FIVE-O!  Charlotte even gave discounts to the honoree and her guests.   Remember to sign up for YOUR birthday tea party, just for you and two guests.......HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO CATHIE, with lots of good quilting years ahead!

Respectfully submitted, Deanna

General Information

We currently have boutique items on display for sale at Mary Ragan's beauty shop, The Peppermint Palace, until Xmas.  Mary is graciously providing us the space, all proceeds going to the guild.  Guild member, Mary Chezem, will look after the sales.  If you have a favorite place that might be willing for boutique items to be put on display for sale, just let me know.  Deanna brought me several bags, but I'm sure there's probably more.

Community Service

Two beautifully written cards were received from the Child Advocacy reflecting their appreciation for the numerous items that have been delivered to them.  The last donation of 13 small quilts, 1 throw, 3 stuffed toys and 1 box of tooth brushes for children (donated by Sylvia Martin's grandson, Dr. Kenny Thompson) was delivered by Sylvia Martin and Pat Sparks.  The thank you was accompanied with pictures of Sylvia and Pat with 2 of the donated quilts.

An additional thank you for recent donations of toiletries came from the Family Haven.   Submitted by Billie Ruth on behalf of Yvonne McDaniel.

Fall Festival Quilt Show        Billie Ruth

It was agreed upon at our last guild meeting to offer an appraisal service at our 2005 show. So that you can be planning ahead and also let friends know. Deborah Roberts of California, a Certified Appraiser by the American Quilter’s Society, will be available all day Friday, Sept. 16th to do appraisals of ½ hr per quilt at a charge of $45. $5 of that fee can be returned to the individual or given to the guild for some guild project or it can be used for Deborah to give an hour lecture in the care of quilts.

Below are the types of appraisals as listed on Deborah Roberts website titled ”The Quilt Appraisal Page”: [email protected].

TYPES OF APPRAISALS

There are three basic types of appraisals.

  1. Insurance Appraisals-This appraisal determines what the replacement value of your quilt or garment is. In other words, how much money it would cost you to replace your damage or lost quilt with one of like and kind. Whether examining a quilt/quilted textile, the information must be in a simple short form since an appraisal is not a documentation. A written appraisal by a qualified appraiser leaves little doubt with your insurance adjuster on a replacement value for the lost quilt.
  2. Fair Market Appraisals—This appraisal is for a market value-that figure arrived upon between a willing buyer and a willing seller, both with knowledge. An AQS certified appraiser is current with the market, both antique and contemporary, including auction and gallery as well as private sales, to the best of their ability. The Fair Market appraisal is an opinion and not a guarantee.
  3. Tax Donation Appraisal—This appraisal is for a client who wants to donate a piece for any reason to any type of organization or place, or to establish a value for an estate/family, often after a death.
