From the President:
Dear
Ladies,
Fun
program Jan! How great to see such gorgeous rag quilts. I’m sure it inspired
all of us.
For
the benefit of those who have missed some of our meetings, you’re missing out
on a lot of important planning. Our plans for our Fall Festival Quilt Show will
need everybody’s participation in some way, whatever way you can. If you can
contribute items to the boutique, but you need some ideas, talk to Sharon
Callahan. We will be working on various quilts, wall hangings, throws, etc. for
our live auction. I appreciate so much those of you
who took material to make circles for the cathedral windows auction quilt. As
soon as this project is finished we’ll have another one to start.
Because
of our desire to reach an ever increasing number of quilters, Deanna will be
using numerous means of advertising throughout the months prior to our quilt
show to encourage quilters from all of our surrounding areas to participate.
Naturally, at some point, we would be hopeful that they would want to join our
guild. But you know, no matter how much we advertise,
nothing is better than your passing the word on to your friends and relatives.
Even if they are not currently quilting, I’ll bet almost everybody you know has
had one or more quilts passed on to them. Encourage their participation. They
do not have to be a Guild member to enter their quilt.
Change
of subject: In an effort to make our meetings as convenient as possible for
everyone’s different needs, we are breaking the meetings into timed parts. If
members or visitors have to arrive late or leave early, they’ll know the
breakdown of the meeting and can feel comfortable arriving or leaving when they
have to. Obviously everybody is welcomed and encouraged to stay the whole time.
That breakdown will be at the bottom of the newsletter (scroll to the end).
I’m
thrilled at the attitude, friendliness, involvement and ideas that are being
generated by our members. It’s this kind of participation that’s making us such
a great group. No matter how little or how much any member can participate,
every bit is appreciated. If at any point, you want to ask more about how you
can help, just give me (903-439-0862) or Deanna (903-994-2570) a call. See you
at Guild and try to bring a friend.

Carol
Morrissey from “Quilt Country” in Lewisville will be sharing her own hand-dyed
fabrics, quilts, and ideas with us this month.
Come prepared to shop as she brings her fabrics to sell.

Ruth’s daughter’s quilt!

MY
THANKS….ahead of time….to everyone who cleaned out drawers, closets, and barns
to make our upcoming GARAGE SALE a
big success! Thanks, too, to all of you
who have your recipes ready to make something for the BAKE SALE. This is a big
one-day event that is not only a lot of fun and fellowship….but profitable to
go towards our many guild projects and activities. Please bring your items early and priced. If you need to leave items early, call
First the
Garage Sale on April 26th, and then the next special event is Folkfest at Heritage Park in Sulphur
Springs. This is also a one-day event,
scheduled for Saturday, May 10 (the day before Mother’s Day). The Guild displays quilts and promotes
quilting at the Wilson House in beautiful Heritage Park. (The Guild just voted to give funds to build
a handicap ramp there so visitors could have access to the quilts.) Many children come by to see us, and we try
to have an activity related to quilting that they can participate in. Just look for the crowd under Roberta’s
canopy! In the past, we have had special
displays by Bettie Hammock, Joe Karney’s and Billie Ruth’s Friendship quilts,
and quilting-in-progress. As always,
this is a great opportunity to show and sell tickets on our donation
quilt. Great news…Misty Thurman has
volunteered to be Co-chair for the event!
Thanks, Misty…so please plan on showing your quilts and helping us
promote and preserve the art of quilting.
We’ll be there, starting at 8:00 AM.

*Our guild is a new member of the Texas Association of Quilt Guilds (TAQG). It should prove to be a good networking source of valuable quilting information. Deanna and I have already attended meetings, learning how other guilds put on quilt shows and apply for non-profit status. We missed the January meeting with a representative from the Internal Revenue Service. Upcoming "secondary" meetings of TAQG are as follows:
May 27 State Comptroller (sales taxes)
July 29 Web Designs
Sept 30 Programs/Workshops
Nov 18 Volunteer Opportunities
I will attend the business portion of each of these meetings as our guild representative, and another of our members should accompany me to sit in on the "secondary meeting".
TAQG's fund raising activities include a raffle quilt and a mini-quilt auction. Our guild, as a member of TAQG, is invited to help with these functions. TAQG also has an annual one-day quilt-type show ("Rally Day") free for members only with a guest speaker (Ami Simms this year), door prizes, goody bags, quilts, and the mini-quilt auction. We are also invited to help fill the goody bags and donate mini quilts. At our April guild meeting, I will have flyers for the Rally Day, raffle quilt tickets, TAQG membership pins for sale, and Rally Day meal tickets for sale. (Next year's Rally Day is sponsored by the Tyler Quilt Guild and the speaker is Mary Ellen Hopkins.)
In addition, I have information and tickets ($5) for the quilt show to be held by The Trinity Valley Quilter's Guild of Fort Worth May 16, 17 & 18. We will have a drawing for one complimentary ticket to this show at our guild meeting in April.
TAQG's web site is http://www.texasassociationofquiltguilds.org. Give it a look see.
Membership Secretary….Sharon Callahan
Thank you, Thank You, Thank
You for paying for your Guild Membership Pins in advance. I now have the
money to pay for the second half of our Guild Pins.
I would also like to send a
warm welcome to one of our new members, Ann Minyard.
I'm sure you all remember the lovely ladies from Reilly Springs who
participated in our Quilt Show last year.
Well, Ann was part of that group. We are in hopes that one or two
more of the ladies are going to join us. Thank you
Billie Ruth for bringing these ladies into our Quilt Guild Family. I
also would like to extend a warm welcome to Linda Bailey. Linda’s mother
is Carolyn Dressler, one of the ladies from Paris,
who gave our wonderful program last month.
If you have not signed up for
the signature block swap, you need to do so at the April Meeting. I will
let you know before the meeting is over, how many blocks you will need to make.
(3 1/2 X 6 1/2 out of unbleached muslin). I would like for us to be able to
swap blocks at the May meeting. I will also be taking advance orders for
our Guild Membership pins. Don't forget to bring a friend and watch our
Membership grow!
Design Committee….Pat Powell
Hello Sister Quilters, from
the design committee. Thanks to all of you who brought red/blue fat
quarters. We have now received, thanks to Zella
at Sew Many Quilts, the remainder of the fabric needed for the donation
quilt. We have a work day planned, at Sew Many Quilts sewing room, for May 22nd. This was about the only
day that it was available. She is having lots of classes now, you might check
them out. According to my records, there are 19 members who have
not picked up their packet of tickets for the donation quilt. As a
friendly reminder, each member is responsible to sell/buy at least 20
tickets or $20.00 . Please pick up your tickets
at the April meeting, see either

Vice
President, Jan Bartley, introduced the speakers. Camille Wideman
presented a great program. She
showed us
how to make a rag quilt and the correct way to use a rotary cutter. She has sewn for many years

teaches in the
many ways
to cut out blocks. She says in quilting
you wear a “cap”, which tells us what to do.
C is to cut out
correctly. A absolutely
accurate seam allowances. P prompt, precise pressing. These three rules spell CAP.
Camille
showed a Ragtime quilt, Hearts and Stars rag quilt, a rag quilt made of 9”
squares, Jewel-tone flannel,
with ¼”
seams. If using 8” squares, have ½”
seams. The quilts were beautiful.
Colleen
Hines introduced the guests and new members.
There were 54 members present, with 3 guests, and
3 new members.
The
President called for a vote to accept the new by-laws. Roberta made the motion, Lequida
seconded it, and
motion
carried.

Board Announcement Re: a Benevolent Fund
With the passing of our guild
member, Audrey Palmer, it has become very apparent to our Board that we do not
have a Guild policy in place that allows us to instantly respond to such a need
that reflects the passing of our members. Currently, without a fund from which
to draw, we would like to propose a one time contribution of a $1.00 per member
to set aside for that purpose. Next year we would be prepared to establish a
Benevolent Fund and to include it as a part of our budget.
As a tribute to Audrey it has
been proposed that $25.00 be donated to Hospice in her name. It seems that this
would be a very fitting honorarium considering that she not only was a
volunteer for Hospice, but was cared for by Hospice in her final weeks. If this is an acceptable proposal, we will collect
your contribution at our next Guild meeting.
