A Note From Our President…

Dear Quilting Friends:

Don't you just love this wonderful fall air?  Makes me want to quilt-quilt-quilt!!!  I hope you get to work on your projects as much as you'd like.

I was able to schedule a workday to work on the serger quilts that Lois Grossman is so prolific with.  We will get together at the Senior Citizens Center on Saturday, October 30 at 9:00 a.m. and work on these quilts until we run out of fabric or energy.  Bring your serger if you have one-- if you don't--we need people to cut, pin, and press.  Bring rotary cutters and mats, large pieces or strips of leftover batting, and a sack lunch.  I think we'll have a lot of fun working on these together and I know we'll have a great sense of accomplishment when we send these to Florida to the storm victims.

Be thinking about Christmas (ugh!) and if you would prefer to have a gift exchange among guild members or pool our money ($5 ??) and adopt a military family or donate to Empty Stocking or some other worthy project.  The idea was brought up at our board meeting and we will let the membership decide at the next meeting.

Speaking of board meetings--we had a very productive one.  We had a great session evaluating the quilt show and we appreciate all your feedback.  There were some things we hadn't thought of.  I think Billie Ruth can give us a report of the most evident changes or great ideas we might incorporate in the future.  Thanks again for all your hard work.  I think we did an outstanding job!!

A slate of officers for the new year will be presented at the next meeting and nominations can also be made from the floor.  The slate will be published in the next newsletter and then voted on at the November meeting.

Your officers are working on the proposed budget for next year.  If you have a concern about where your guild money is spent or where you would like to see us spend more, please let any of the officers know.  Remember---it's your guild.

Here's to a great autumn season for all and a spooky Halloween to you!

Publicity/Historian -  The Quilt Show photos are back and the 2004 quilt show scrapbook will be ready for you to see at the October guild meeting.....what great memories we have of that fantastic show, thanks to all the work done by our great volunteers!  (We have probably already forgotten about those tired feet!)   There are photos, also, of our quilting demonstration at the State Fair of Texas, which turned out to be three hours instead of two......there was lots of interest in the techniques being shown, and we have been asked to return to next year's fair..........good job, everyone!   ......................................Thanks, Deanna

Design Committee Report…Pat Pillard

The quilt is now completed, thanks to all who helped. We met on Oct 7 to hand sew the binding and that is definitely the way. What would have taken one-person hours, with five of us sewing took less than two! Of course Joy Rutledge is twice as fast as the rest of us, and does beautiful work to boot. Bettie Hammock joined us and made the label for our quilt and we are especially thankful. It is great to have people in our guild who are talented and helpful. Gwen Karney filled in for Cecilia Anderson, who is on vacation. Pat Sparks and myself brought the number to five. Never again I hope do I plan to sew a binding on without a few more needles. I wonder how many times do we do alone something made so much fun with the addition of helping, friendly hands. We will display for your approval at the next meeting.

Does anyone have a copy of “Baltimore Beauties Part One” by Elly Sienkiewicz? I need it for a class I am taking in Houston this Nov. I have looked everywhere and it is out of print. Sure would appreciate the loan if you have one.

Are you enjoying your guild cookbook? I am. Such a good job those gals have done for us. If you didn’t get one do so

Hello Dear Ladies:

Hello everyone!  We are having a beautiful fall and it is an exciting and energetic time of year when we all begin our Holiday Planning for our families.  This year when making your Christmas list - remember our Guild Cook Books.  They are continuing to sell, but we still need a joint effort to sell all of them.  I plan to give cookbooks to my nieces and sister-in-laws with a home made apron this year.

I will continue to bring cookbooks to each meeting until they are all gone.  Buy a few at a time each month -- they will make wonderful gifts year round.

Last month we had a lovely, fun meeting.  A special thanks to Sherry Shockley, last month's hostess coordinator, for ushering in the Fall theme with her very good Gumbo.  Followed by additional recipes of side dishes & desserts by other hostesses.  They were; Joy Rutledge, Pat Sparks, and Elaine Sprague.  Thank you ladies for a lovely fall menu.  We all enjoyed.

Next month for our Oct. 25th meeting hostesses will be:

Billie Ruth - coordinator, Ruby Stone, Tammy Olague, Donna Rankin, and Jean Thurman.  We look forward to sampling your snacks & recipes.  Can't wait to see what you have in store for us!

On the personal side, my daughter Jeannie & grand daughters enjoyed the meeting last month.  Thanks to everyone for being so friendly & nice.

Jeannie is in the process of making a Chili Pepper Wall Hanging grouping of 3.

It was looking beautiful.  Dell City, Texas - where they live - is a 2-hour drive from any large town.  Dell City's main crop & source of income is growing Chili Peppers, so Jeannie was delighted with last month's snip pit program.  They all left just last Sunday evening, so we had a nice visit.

Have a wonderful fall and see you girls on Oct. 25th.

  Suggestions for Special Feature

1) Issuing a block challenge to the public, as well as our own members, to make a block that is on behalf of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, to be sent in to our guild and will be displayed at the Fall Festival Quilt Show as individual blocks. The direction will be to create a quilt block expressing an inspirational message for those affected by breast cancer.

After the show, these individual blocks will be sent on to Dallas for the sponsoring companies, Quilted Northern and The View (ABC Daytime program) to make a quilt to be auctioned online to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Foundation.

In addition to sending the blocks into Dallas, if we had enough blocks left over, we might wish to consider making the reaming blocks into a quilt that could be kept here and donated to our own Cancer Foundation that they could either raffle or auction off with benefits for the Cancer Foundation going to help local victims.

2) Display a quilt that is made from wood and has been shown at all major shows and as of the last American Quilt Society Show in Paducah, it was on display at their Quilt Museum.
