what is tribes:
It's a first-person shooter, but it's only "like
Quake" in the sense that it's the same genre.
For the most part the gameplay has a much more
controlled pace to it, so it's not quite as twitchy a game.
It's multiplayer only and really encourages teamplay.
You are also able to deploy objects throughout the map to help your
team with offense and defense.
You can also affect certain objects throughout
the map (such as destroying an enemy radar sensor or repairing your
team's main generator), control turrets and operate vehicles. You are
also able to customize your weapon loadout and choose between various
armor types that have different protection value and mobility.
It's multiplay only, and most games are CTF between
two teams, but I've seen Multiple Team games with 3 or 4 sides. There
are also
"Defend and Destroy" missions where the goal
is to protect certain objects in your base while destroying the enemy's.
"Find and Retrieve" missions where your team
must locate and recover flags throughout the map to win.
"Capture and Hold" missions where your team must
claim an objective (or objectives) and hold it until time runs out
or until your team has accumulated enough points.
"Deathmatch", which nobody really plays, and
"Rabbit", which is pretty much kill-the-man-with-the-flag.
All in all, if you haven't tried Tribes yet,
you're really missing out. It should be available for a pretty low
price nowadays ($15 or lower), since it's been out for at least a year
and a half (I think). I can confidently say it's one of the best games
I've ever played, that it's set a new standard for future multiplayer
games, both in terms of gameplay and features, and that if you enjoy
any type of FPS game, you'll LOVE Tribes. (And just wait till Tribes
2 comes out in November!!)
